If you recall when Nova started, there were a few complaints here about the lack of certain rock bands on the playlist. The reason is that many people thought it was rock station in the broad sense.

I read somewhere on this forum that Nova should leave out the "classic" description..I agree ,they clearly arent a classic rock station when they include up to the minute tracks from KOL , Coldplay etc....
Theyre playlist is so restricted that theyre pleasing none of the people all of the time..IMO..I'd like to hear more modern stuff along with the classics..say 50/50...and stop mentioning that theyre a classic rock station....:)

As with 98FM when it was "Classic Hits 98FM" and with the current station "Classic Hits 4FM", the word "classic" is taken as not necessarily having to mean "old".

Who is pat mcmanus? Nova waffle on about him as if hes the greatest musician ever and were giving away a guitar signed by him and making a huge deal out of it

Ex-Mama's Boys, a stunning, outstanding guitarist and really nice bloke.

Truly one of the best guitarists I've ever seen.

    A.

p.s. Oh, the rest of his band are superb, too.

Saw them in Kate Reilly's' Kitchen (possibly the only time they played Waterford and were not in the The Showboat! :p) my ears were ringing for a day or two.

Saw Mamas Boys a few times in the 80s - definitely the loudest band I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of metal bands over the years!

    Shame.

And if they play Smoke on the f*cking water one more time...

I hate that song! And I used to like it before it got played 50 times a week*!

    *MAY BE an exaggeration!

    NAH....that sounds about right..........;)

I dont know if anyone else has noticed the increase in "classic rock" tunes appearing on the other stations lately...........

If I hear Bloody Well Right one more time I'm going to rip the radio out of my car. I'm not a big fan of 20 minute long Pink Floyd noise solos either but that could just be me.

In my opinion, radio in Dublin is pretty bad. Whenever I got stateside I love radio there. Firstly there is huge choice of stations in every genre you can think of, but also the quality is quite high for most places.

Nova should take a listen to some of the decent rock stations there. They can play modern up to date stuff but also mix in more classic stuff and oldies. You're not going to like every song they play but you're guaranteed there will be good stuff on. The only stuff that is repeated often would be new releases, you're not going to hear the same 30 songs everyday for weeks.

Whereas with Nova you can pretty much guess what songs will be on everyday and a lot of it is just old crap that was crap when it was released back then too and it's repeated day in day out. A bit of variety would be nice.

Sadly the powers that be at Nova dont give a crap about their listeners...its all about the money, not the music...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,058 ✭✭✭Gaspode

I like Nova and will stick with it for a while simply because it's the best of really really crap lot when it comes to music on the radio here.
I like rock music, and this is as close as it gets in Dublin to a rock station imo.
It does piss me off daily that they play the same songs over and over, but at least it's not the pure sh1t that's in the charts.
It also disappoints me that they continually underestimate their over target audience - people who like rock tend (generalising here) to appreciate albums much more than singles, so just playing the most well know track by a band is really off-putting. I've yet to hear them play a Black Sabbath song that wasnt feckin boring Paranoid, easily one of the worst Sabbath songs recorded.
Same applies to any other band you want to mention.
They need to start putting their money where their mouth is and cater to Rock fans by playing a more diverse range of songs.

The other change they need to make is to drop 50% of their news slots. Who the hell needs updates every 30 minutes, it's ridiculous!

Having said all that, they still annoying me less than any other station. Go figure!

I gave up listening to Nova shortly after it went on air. I tuned in recently and unfortunately it still sounds the same. If the list of those who left is accurate, then maybe they're pushing out more and more 94.9 imports. Its been a poor product.

Tuned in today (by mistake..:p) and my ears nearly bled...Bill (No ..thats my natural colour hair) Cullen was on praising Nova in some sort of ad thingy......Pat Courtney..yer fired................:p

Thats funny...I heard Dr Billo doing the same in an ad on 98fm;)

Anways back to nova...I'm more of a news and current affairs person during the day so I cant really speak about their output then, but I do listen in the morning and at night.

I like the music, i sometimes think its a pity about the links inbetween. In fact the overnight stuff is probably the best, loads of songs, not so many links

There lies the problem with Nova (imo)..its people like you that they seem to be satisfying...people who listen for a few minutes at a time during the day...its the poor sods in factories and shops that have Nova on in the background , but arent actually listening....
It wont be long before it turns into yet another talk station with the odd rock song thrown in....oh wait thats Phantom....:p

I know I've posted before about the repetition on Nova so this in itself is a repeat!!,but I tuned into Nova just after 5pm last night to see who the double-shot was,it Pearl Jam,again, and the two songs were "Jeremy",and "Alive" again.

This is at least the third time I've these songs played on the double-shot,surely to god Pearl Jam have more than these two songs ????

I don't know why,but I just expected a whole new playlist for the new year, maybe I was hoping Santy had brought them a load of new albums, but no,the same oul songs.

While I'm at it,who is the dj in the afternoon,he never says who he is !!;);)

Thats the "man with no name"...........:D

I'm an ex-listener too......my problem was that theres certain bands that i can take or leave, Bowie, The Who, AC/DC, Beatles, Lizzy...... that said i would not change the station if one would come on....but the aforementioned are the main bands that they play....and to add salt, its the same tracks everytime....and then theres endless repeats Dooley with her wowzey new invention slots...PITA....
They wont change while they've got their 133,000 so called "listeners"....

Anyone remember how good The Rock was.........mmmmm ..

This is more of a technical gripe but do they have to have so much reverb in their processing chain? It seems like everything, including the ads and the news audio clips, has an immense reverb with a decay of like 500ms on it and it's the most distracting thing whenever I listen in!
Granted I normally use a tiny bit of verb when I'm working on voiceovers but to have it on everything???

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yup, it comes across weird swhen they're talking. I really wish they wouldn't do it.

I listen to Nova at nighttime usually. I do like the runs of music you get with very little talk in between. Mind you, you know what you'll get. I can gauarantee I'll here Cry Before Dawn - gone Forever, and Parachute by Tom & his mates and a Waterboys track thrown in for good measure. They've stopped playing Rory Gallagher thankfully. I like Rory but i was getting sick of the same song over and over again.

Firstly I'd like to say that I try and defend nova to my friends but the repition in the last week has got ridiculous. Maybe it's always been as bad but it's really starting to bug me know. If I hear that song barracuda once more ill throw the radio out the window.

A new jingle for them should be "Radio nova, making you hate songs that you once loved"

You shouldnt have to defend Nova to anyone.......they've fcuked it up for themselves..

We have Radio Nova on at the moment - it isn't bad as it goes.

BUT and this is a big BUT - it's not Classic Rock when it plays Coldplay!!

"Guitar Music" does not cut it - ffs Girls Aloud have a session guitarist on there, don't start playing that!!!

Having said that, Muse are on now with Uprising. Which is class.

Dear Radio Nova, Please stop playing the live Roger Waters 'Wish You Were Here' track with Van Morrisson on your overnight runs. It was great the first four or five times but now it's just become incredibly boring. It's great Van gigged with Waters and all but it's quite long and the novelty value has well worn off at this point.

    Regards...
