I wouldn'y consider myself racist by any means but I just happen to dislike most of these actors, nevertheless I will go see this movie because of my love for the P-51 Mustang

    Because it's irrelevant?

    Oh really?

The Irish were treated badly when they first arrived too.

Somehow, they managed to do okay for themselves & by & large didn't use the 'blame culture/race card' to get along with their lives.

Instead, they worked hard. made connections in the right places & wound up running the show for the period of the Kennedy administration.

I'm delighted that Obama is now in charge.

Try talking to the Black community now about discrimination now.

Someone else is always to blame, innit though?

I'm a member of that Black community so... yeah....uhm.

Of course Hollywood is racist, how many real movies have had inter racial marriages that have worked out, when does an ethnic character not have a horrible accent and why the Fcuk does Samuel Jackson always have to be the angry black guy. Worst Racist moment in Hollywood history though was the accents in Far and Away

Btw, Will Smith is exempt, he is really a couple of Scientologist migets in a black guy suit.

    ...........

.......it has to be said that was surreal allright. Quite deliberate though. They wanted a 'Quiet man' vibe, apparently.

The only colour that matters in Hollywood is green.
    Article is retarded.

    Hollywood is not racist.

Movie studios are glad to shovel whatever crap out the door will get them money back in.

Movies with all black casts typically do poorly; particularly in the international market.

Hollywood isn't racist. Movie-goers are racist. Particularly international movie goers.

If Hollywood or movie-goers are racist I really doubt it's deliberate.

There was actually an article in Cracked that mentioned the reason for this. Films with all black casts dont do as well because a large share off the market for films is white and they will unconsciously prefer films where the cast or some of the cast is white.

The best way to have a film with an all-black cast to do well is to put a white person in the lead. At the end of the day the biggest concern of some hollywood execs is how to get the most money out of the film and thats why this happens.

People from the British Isles being cast as villains.

Also the number of Jewish religious ceremonies in films is unsettling.

Outside of the Godfather type films you rarely see confirmation.

I don't even know the names of the Muslim equivalent.

There was a rule in the US that they had to have at least one minority actor in a film, like yer man from Ghostbusters who just showed up and didn't do much because he wasn't in the original storyline.

But Hollywood is all about the most recent formula (even if it's a successful book / TV series / film from outside Hollywood) that worked with a Plan B of a remake.

I disagree with this unless you are talking about historical films that were based on stories in the colonial period; otherwise, the bad guys in films typically follow the bad guys that America is presently fighting with.

In the 80s and 90s, the bad guys were Eastern European, typically East German or Russian. In other words, they were communists.

In the late 90s, they were Middle Eastern or Northern African. Definitely of the Islamic faith at this point, but we hadn't pinpointed a particular region.

After 2001, they have been from regions that have been identified as having large extremist Islamic sects including militias from Africa, Iraq, Syria, and so on.

Some of the then-recent Irish arrivals to America were quite displeased at the growing anti-slavery movement initiated by the Republican party in America at the time of the civil war. This was mainly due to a fear 'the black man' competing with the Irish for their jobs and also a perception they would undermine their wages. So, yeah, they made the right connections, but sometimes by undermining the black population. History's a complex thing, though, right?

It's all about money, though. Changing the lead character of I Am Legend to Will Smith is proof of this. Will Smith can bring in huge revenue (or at least he did at the time) so Hollywood will use a black actor (usually just Will Smith) if he has proven he can bring in audiences to make a profit for the studio.

I hardly think it was a coincidence that Dolemite wasn't even considered by the academy for an award.

I don't think Hollywood is racist - instead it just plays on human instinct and our own prejudices.

Being lighter skinned or white is the international colour of beauty and puts you at a higher social-eco class.

I was watching a few Beyonce videos and how many of her videos have dark black girls?....very few. Black Americans rather see lighter skin blacks.

South Africa too, lighter skinned blacks discriminate against the darker ones.

Same in Asia, the lighter skinned you are the more beautiful you're perceived, and also look at geishas in Japan.

Also Bollywood has the same problem that they dont use darker skinned Indians. And lighter skinned people are seen as more beautiful.

We go to the movies to see the surreal and the exceptionally beautiful and funny.

I'm trying to remember but I think City of God touched on this too. And that wasn't a Hollywood film

The light skinned Brazilians looking down on the black Brazilians

I could be wrong, just think the film referenced this

Hollywood just discriminates against anything that might not make them as much money so these conventions persist, If you're white in Hollywood you can get a huge amount of roles usually if you're an ethic minority you're not welcome at the first round of castings for shows and film but asked to attend further rounds to find side kicks or smaller roles opposed to lead roles :|

It's hard to say that's not racist but I know that if it made them more money it would be the other way around.

And finally I'm not sure about Black Americans necessarily just seeing lighter skin as more appealing as I have heard of many cases of a lighter black person being made fun of and derogatorily called a mulatto or not really black for not being pigmented enough.

Hollywood movies are aimed at mainly white countries so its only natural to have mainly white actors. You watch a movie made in Asia and you'll see mainly Asians.

And Mulatto is a mixed race person who's parents are white and black. It's a derogatory term but also calling a mixed race black/white person black is also offensive to them. They do suffer discrimination from the very small idiot minority but it stems from the slave days, as I once heard a black person say "The lighter skinned blacks slept in the house, we slept in the fields".

And America racism problem is much different to ours and I really dont think we should be caught up in their PC war, we never kept slaves!

Lastly, lighter black girls are seen as prettier, how many female black celebs do you know that are 'wesley snipes' black? Also put 'hot black girls' into google images and see how many are dark.

It's not only natural (really despise that problematic word ) it depends on the story and the role it doesn't have to be tokenistic but it is and that is western culture within art and film the white middle class male perspective is the default. But outside of western culture lighter is not always prettier and can I just say what a ridiculous spectrum for beauty.
still confused as to why you just explained two or three things that I was already aware of and didn't ask what the definition, wasn't even talking about political correctness or asking what a mulatto person was or slavery. :pac:

Sorry saa for the rambling so :o

But men have always preferred lighter skinned girls in most cultures outside of western culture even way before colonization and western influence.

It's not a racism issue, I remember reading that it's a sign that the girl isnt just some peasant working in the sun all day (if she can afford not to work in the sun than her family must have a bit of cash). Though in many cultures woman prefer darker man because of that reason - It's not racism it's just human instinct hard wired into our brains.

Yeah, most Black folk don't use the term Mulatto or Quadroon or Octaroon any longer. Those words probably fell out 60-70 years ago.

A light skinned Black person isn't necessarily someone who is half-White and half-Black. They just happen to have a lighter complexion in spite of having two Black parents. Vanessa Williams is someone who is an example of this; both her parents are Black but she inherited blue eyes, lighter skin and lighter hair from White ancestors generations back. If we want to insult someone like that, we would call them "high yella" or "lemonhead" (lemon heads are a type of candy).

Hollywood and the music industry have placed more spotlight on the lighter skinned women but in the last 20 years, I would say that there has been a shift towards Blacks demanding to see more medium to darker skinned talent and there has been an increase in those individuals getting gigs. Oddly enough, we are more likely to find lighter skinned women and darker skinned men.

Although someone objected to Spike Lee, I think this video is very relevant to what we are discussing on the subject of skin tone:

But there has definitely been an increase in the number of medium and darker toned Black actresses getting lead roles. Gabrielle Union, Kerry Washington, and Taraji P. Henson have gotten several leading roles in feature films in the last couple of years.
