Yes it is.
Put the sign on the chest, then select it using right click, when selected, use /lockette <line number> <text>
Put line number as 3 or 4 and text as the person's name
i tried that but think i may have done it wrong,
do i press 't' to type and then do it or do i type it when i right click.
i was typing /lockette

Just remove the sign,
place it on the ground in front of the chest,
Fill in the lines as follows:
1 - [private]
2 - <Blank, or your name> (adds your name automatically anyway)
3 - <Second user>
4 - <Third user>
Usernames are not case specific.0 -

The <> was just to show, you don't actually put that in. To add me you would write:
/lockette 3 deconduo
Or from a fresh sign:

Since I updated does that mean I can't play on server anymore
Yep
If you have windows 7 you can restore minecraft easily by clicking start and typing run into search bar and then %appdata% into the run box. Then you should be able to see a file called .minecraft and right click and choose properties and click previous versions. Mine backs up daily so I restored to yesterdays
