I dont understand why people sign up to the likes of ''JJB'' and other gyms to exercise when they can clearly just decide to lose weight other ways like Going for a walk or a run. Or running up and down your stairs and making your own weights and getting on yer bike.

The amount of money these gyms must make out of people is a joke. People spend X amount a year on absolute rubbish they could replicate themselves and cut costs.

Because it's very easy to procrastinate when you exercise at home, whereas when you go to the gym there's feck all else to do but exercise.Plus swimming pool/steam room/sauna,classes etc too.

My gym costs €250 for 14 months so not bad value imo.

Yeah & why do people pay for restaurants!! Sure you could go and get the ingredients and cook them yourself!
Those places must make a fortune off people each year when they could go out and make it themselves saving money!

    Its business, and convienence :confused::confused:

Because we don't own swimming pools.

If you make the effort to go to the gym chances are you will exercise.
Whereas if you are at home you might not do it regularly enough, if at all.

What do you do when you want to lift heavy weights?

I can see it now you saying it to the missus:

"sorry love no washing the clothes tonight, im benching the washing machine"

I used to enjoy going to the gym. People have different interests and for some people the gym is an enjoyable place for them to do their exercise like fellas who do weights in groups and people who do classes.

I gave the gym up when I stopped enjoying it and started seeing it as a chore. I looked up one day while on a cross-trainer at the back of the room and saw every else doing exactly the same thing like hamsters on their wheels.

I much prefer walking and cycling but I don't fancy cycling on London roads so I have an exercise bike which isn't as fun but sure it'll do.

There's nothing wrong with the gym if people like going but yeah the prices are stupid- don't know how they justify them. It's a tenner to go for a swim in my local pool!!

Because there is an assumption that merely by spending the money, one will lose weight.

I love exercising outdoors, but it's very difficult to check out the hot-bodied girls wearing bra tops and lycra pants if I'm only running past the gym they're in, so I'll pay the money and improve the perving experience for myself.

I dunno. I think there is more of a fun and outdoor way of losing weight or gaining some muscle than just sitting in a room full of sweaty hamsters going nuts on the machines thats all. I think it's a waste of money too.

I'm a gym addict. Over an hour almost every day.

There's absolutely no way on earth you could replicate their facilities at home for a similar cost to membership.

I actually get a lot of motivation out of having people around doing the same kind of thing even though I dont do classes or group stuff. The eye candy is pleasant too.

Because I get all the weights equipment I need, which would cost a fortune and I've never owned my own place. And I can have a steam room and sauna afterwards, which makes me feel fantastic. Or have a swim or play squash. Love it. It's my sanctuary. Plus I can perve on hot chicks.

Between a €25 set of weights from argos and running around my area i've been sorted for several years. Played rugby at a fairly high standard with people who went to the gym religiously and I can't say there was much of a difference in fitness and development. Seems like a complete waste of money to be honest

Everyone should be getting at a minimum twenty minutes of Sweat Exercise a day. That means warming up, reaching a level of sweatiness and keeping it there for twenty minutes.

    Thats the daily minimum.

Anyone who's doing that and still dislikes using a gym then I'll respect their opinion.

    Otherwise...well...

When I was growing up all the big lads were lifting blocks out their back gardens. I don't use gyms since the time and expense isn't really worth it. Eye candy, has anyone ever actually pulled a fellow gym goer? Its not my eyes that need the candy! I do chinups at home, lift weights, jog down to the Atlantic ocean and swim for half an hour, then jog back. Nothing much to see there except a gang of hoary oul bastards, but then again I'm not looking to pull them either! :D I sometimes box as well, I've a homemade bag from a great outdoors purchase.

If I had my own gaf and had a squat rack and olympic barbells and 200kg of plates I'd not bother with a gym, but 99% of people who want to lift heavy don't have that, so they go to gyms

The only gym near enough my house that I'd use it costs a fortune. Used to be a member of the same chain when I lived in Deansgrange, earned a bit more and didn't have a family to support out of the paycheque. It's the luxury I miss most tbh.

I have a bench in the shed but no room to set it up, no pool / steam room / plunge pool at home and Irish weather's a bitch to get out and run in...

Is that the 70e a month one near your location? I used to go there when I lived in Dublin, had a flat in the crescent across the road, those were the days...

God no. The eye candy is simply that. Eye... candy...

However it probably still makes up 20% of my motivation for going to the gym!

    Dirty old man? Sure. absolutely.

Why do married men pay for prostitutes when they can have sex with their wives?

So I can have a shower at the gym, clearly!

Its horrible to go out for a run in the irish weather. Its dark by 4.30/5 and if you go out earlier when its not dark youre running against strong winds (which is really annoying because you go about twice as slow and it feels like your not going anywhere fast and making no progress) and the rain spitting in your face. A run on a threadmill in a nice bright clean gym is far nicer and it counts your progress/times/calories too.

    convenience

    motivation

    range of equipment

    girls wearing very tight clothing...

Threadmills are the stupidest thing ever though and don't know how people use them???

I work out both at home and at the gym. For the days that I just want to go straight home and relax for a while I end up doing a work out there. Just finished a hiit/sprint workout which took 30 mins in the comfort of my kitchen :D If I need to do heavy weights then I haul my ass off to the gym and get my value for money there.....Ben Dunne rocks ;)
