An idea for a new sport for you to train in: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Firstly let me say that this is not a spam thread, I'm just spreading the word about a sport I love. I see threads here with people looking to get fit and pick up something new for the new year. I know it can be hard to stick at the gym and often, people aren't stimulated enough by exercise, so I thought I'd share this. I also have an interest in growing the sport as a whole, not just in my club ( www.kyuzogym.com ) but nationally too.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fast growing martial art that has only been in existence in Ireland for about a decade. It is a non-striking art, in other words, you are not allowed to deliberately hit or kick your opponent. Instead it focuses on teaching techniques to control an opponent and, ultimately, "submit" them using a fight ending joint lock or choke. It has been popularised as one of the components of MMA (as seen in the UFC) but it exists in the main as a standalone sport and martial art and most people who train it do not also train MMA, although there is some crossover.

In terms of pure fitness, BJJ is literally like nothing else in the world. I've had extremely fit and strong individuals exhausted after literally a few minutes of practice, but soon you develop both a higher level of fitness and of course a better idea of how to conserve energy while grappling which helps too.

What also makes BJJ so great to train is the literally endless methods and techniques employed. Even guys training 20+ years still speak of being surprised by new movements and techniques. It is fast evolving and a very vibrant young sport to be involved in.

Best of all, it is an extremely inclusive sport, and most clubs have both a competitive (sporting) aspect and a casual or recreational aspect for those who do not wish to compete. There are many clubs with children's classes, and I regularly roll (spar) with a few guys who are approaching their 50th birthday. There is, of course, every age group in between.

I have listed a by no means complete list of clubs around Ireland below. If I've left any out, please let me know and I'll be sure to add them.

Very much a beginner here and I'm incredibly excited to be training in this stuff. So, so much to learn.

SBG's City Centre (Dublin) branch didn't get mentioned yet, I think: http://www.sbgireland.com/index.php/sbg-city-centre

They've a promotion on at the moment with a free first month training for new members or something, far as I know. Check out the SBG facebook I guess.

Straight Blast Gym Longmile Road has a free months training for January for new members also with a full beginner programme of classes - as well as BJJ you have the striking arts of boxing and thai boxing as well as wrestling. All levels and fitness levels catered for. I've been rolling just under a year and a half and have enjoyed huge physical benefits from the sport as well as socially! Best thing I've ever done and if anyone is near one of the clubs mentioned then I guarantee they will no regret popping in and giving it a go.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I'll keep adding but can we limit this to just discussion about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and not other sports like MMA/Thai etc. Perhaps someone could start a thread about those elsewhere with some benefits and so on.

Not in the slightest Barry, it's a great post - I'll leave this here for a bit and when the full list of clubs is compiled I'll add it to the resources sticky :)

Nice thread, lots of people on here asking questions about starting routines
in Jan (and throughout the year) and you can tell many of them don't know what they want (bar to lose weight and get fit), so good to see people providing suggestions and promoting their sports of choice. As Barry pointed out many people get bored with normal excercise hence getting involved in a sport can generate more staying power as it's more engaging than running on a treadmill.

Lots of offers going on at the minute too if you check the Self Defence/MA forum. My place has an open night tomorrow evening, and some guys are offering free training too.

It's a great time to get involved in the sport.

I took up a new sport last year, shotputting. It had a disastrous effect on my lawn.

Tel me Barry, if I were to take up Jiu Jitsu, what effect would it have on my lawn?

I can assure you there will be no affect on your lawn, though you may find yourself practicing on any garden gnomes you might have.

We are probably the smallest and youngest MMA school in Ireland
When we started in the first competition, people asked us where we are and most of did not know where is the Carrickmacross.
Constantly repeated that the guys that did not care that one day they all will learn from where we are and what it means to Ferocity MMA TEAM.
Our dreams have come true ... For over a year we took part in most of the BJJ tournaments and fought in six professional fights on big shows in the cage, winning five of them in the first or second minute of the first round and won the championship title.
With competition in BJJ never returned without medals.
Together we have won 8 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze ...
There are some great MMA schools in Ireland with great coaches, but if you living in the area and access to us is not a problem for you join us in the new 2012, and we will show you how to train to catch up with the best in MMA
You too can become a champion and a part of Ferocity MMA TEAM.
Of course, we invite not only the fighters.
We also conduct classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Beginners and strengh and conditioning classes for everyone.
    Check our site: www.ferocity.ie
    or call 087 645 1279 .

For anyone interested in bjj in Clare, Fightsports Clare do classes in Ennis on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in the hall on Chapel Lane (opposite Xtravision). The site is fightsportsireland.com.

I've trained there for about a year and found both the gourp of lads training there and the trainer, John, to be excellent.

Wild Geese Martial Arts(just off Pearse Street in Dublin 2)also offer BJJ classes.Tried it a few times and loved it, I come from a judo background.Would love to do more but there are only so many hours in the day and my main focus is getting the black belt in judo. However, that said, I'm always eager to get back on the mat and try more BJJ as it can only help improve my fitness.

I'm sure you can do better than that. A decent post means I don't have to go hunting and your club gets an exposure in the post itself.

Tuatha de Dannann in Portlaoise do BJJ classes.

Isn't there a BJJ club in Athy too?

Was in SGB in City Centre for my first ever BJJ class. Really, really enjoyed it too, was getting swept all over the place etc but enjoyed the session, learned a few things (the first of many hopefully) and was a really good workout. Can't wait to get into it. Its going to be a fun new year :)
