It's not unusual if you don't have an interest in games, no.

Over the years I've owned a Commodore 64, a Sega Megadrive and a Playstation as well as borrowing consoles from my nephew. One Christmas I played Donkey Kong Country on his Super Nintendo until I got such a headache I felt like my brain was going to explode. I can't imagine getting that addicted to any game now. I still have the Megadrive and Playstation but they're gathering dust somewhere and I'm not even sure if they still work.

I have no interest in consoles now although I sometimes play online games. I like the more simple ones that resemble older games. This and this for instance.

I certainly wouldn't have any interest in modern games where the graphics are better than the actual game. I don't get those first person shooters or whatever they're called either. They all seem to be about wandering around with nothing happening for ages until suddenly a bunch of soldiers or aliens attack and you have to shoot them before they shoot you. Incredibly boring and repetitive.

I get violent even thinking about it :D

you realise 25-35 is the average age of gamers these days? I dont know one person who's male who doesnt play games in some capacity. people still associate gaming with playing pac man and simplistic games and a pasttime for kids, these people are retarded though.

A bunch of wierdos playing Mario The Hedgehog Fantasy 7 on their Sega X-StationCube 2 with the curtains pulled in the dark.

    Lonely, lonely wierdos.

Sorry but I find it very strange how someone can use such a strong word having never owned a console?
Because I've played some, even though I didn't ever own one. I just don't like them. Some people don't like sports, some people don't like politics, me I really dislike games consoles!

in terms of money generated, it's been bigger than the movie industry for years

Wii is not a real console

It's a "plaything" for children, the elderly and fat people who wan't to feel like their losing weight while balancing on a white board in front of their television.

    Are all consoles not "playthings"?

they're entertainment devices. just like tv and books, you sit around while you use them, but they tend to be a lot more involving

The PS3 (and more recently, the 360 catching up) is a media centre. I know a few people who have one just for the media side of it, streaming, music, films, blu-ray.

Personally (28yo male), I've always been a huge gamer. Started with Pong back in the 80's, upgraded to an Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Gameboy, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3, DSi, XPS Laptop, 360. Have also borrowed the C64, Megadrive, Dreamcast, GameCube.

I game on average of about 4 hours a day, but if i was off work for a few days and herself was gone visiting for those days i'd easily clock up 14+ hours a day.

I'm not a sports fan, don't like the majority of tv programmes, not a huge music fan, read the rare odd book, not a big drinker. So any time that other people put into those activities/past-times, i put into gaming.

I've tried the first half hour of it and i don't think it's for me, bit too slow after Skyrim...

    Am I the only one???

My friends have owned everything from commodore 64 to X box online thingy but I never really had an interest since I left school 20 years ago and we couldnt afford one when I was a kid.

    Is this totally unusual?

Nah I do not and have never owned one either - - but having said that I currently do not even own a television.

Do have a PC though and as far as I know the C64 was also a PC not a games console.

piffle, its got some amazing games past all the fitness nonsense. Skyward Sword and Mario Galaxy 2 are two of the best games of this generation of consoles.

I dont understand how people who probably havent played a game since the SNES days dismiss the entire industry in its current form. Games have never been more involving, more well written and the production values surpass movies these days, look at Uncharted 2, its like playing the best summer blockbuster you've ever seen.
When you see the amount of Hollywood talent getting involved in doing voiceovers for games you see how much stroke the industry has, sure LA Noire has half the cast of Mad Men doing voices in it.
Not that every game needs to be a movie rivalling experience, there's still plenty of fun to be had playing something simple or retro, hell I chuck on Bubble Bobble on my mame emulator occasionally for the lulz, or play some classic NES game to get away from Call Of Duty:Shooting People In Their Stupid Faces 6 for a while.

I'm 30 and have been a gamer since I was a kid, and thats never going to change. I'm currently educating my 8 year old nephew on the joys of retro games, had him playing Streets Of Rage 2 on christmas night :pac:

If you actually read the thread you would've read my post about me being a big gamer.

I couldn't have made my Mario The Hedgehog Fantasy 7 on their Sega X-StationCube 2 post any more sarcastic.

Yet another sonic-boom over the head. Double Kill :pac:

Dark Souls is sitting waiting to be opened until I finish Skyrim - got it cheap 2nd hand. Figure no other games are getting a look in until then, so maybe March / April. Either way just a great way to forget about the dark nights.

Especially since jogging is off the cards due to injury - consoles and great games are just a fantastic way to burn off the hassle of work after a long day.
Only cautionary note is if you play just a bit too much the games can bleed into your dreams - Skyrim when you are asleep is a hell of a lot more frightening than when you are safely on your couch... For someone like me with vivid dreams where I rarely know I am asleep - this is not always a good thing. Saying that though last night it was Sudoku...

OP - still suggest you try to just get a play on either a PS3 or an Xbox - try some of the different features - media playback / movies etc and take it from there.

Real life is where I go to get away from Skyrim. least I havent been attacked by ninja bears in the real world.

But in real life people don't fly around the place when you shout at them.

Generally, you get locked up :(

Worth a shot then is it? Only I gave up playing the previous title in that series after 3 hours of game play in contortions of boredom and frustration at the idiocy of some of the ways the game gave you missions such as sitting on a horse in the middle of nowhere and being told suddenly "You just heard a rumour - a mission has been added to your mission log". Needless to say I did not look at the horse the same way again.

My first console was the SEGA master system...played double dragon and Alex kidd for hours.. then I went on to the Commadore Amiga 500+ and after that the original playstation. Now I play the Wii and DS the odd time.

I got a lot of entertainment out of them in the earlier days but not so much lately due to time they take up.

    Maybe it deserves another thread...

    1. Do you play video games with your partner?
    2. If so, any similar experiences? :)

I had a playstation and playstation 2 but Havent touched games in years. I just felt I was completely wasting my life sitting in front of it then realising you've been there for an entire day.

I wouldnt blame anyone for being into them though, they are a load of fun, i just get too obsesive and would rather do something outdoors or learn an instrument

If anyone thinks that GTA and the MGS series are the height of good writing in videogames then they're very very wrong. Just like the movie industry there's a very strong indie movement that makes some very experimental games and can make some very emotional pieces of art. GTA, Uncharted, Skyrim and MGS are just entertainment but if you really want to be rewarded its worth delving a little deeper. Stuff from indie developers like like Braid and To the Moon what videogames can do as a medium for storytelling. Every so often you also get a blockbuster that pushes the envelope, less so these days though. Silent Hill 2 for example explores guilt through some very disturbing imagry. There's also Earthbound which is a surrealist exploration of growing up and taking responsibility.

Gaming isn't just abouttaking on Hollywood at it's blockbusters. There's a strong games as art movement as well that has been going on for years. It's just unfortunate that a lot of people have very closed minds to the medium including the mass media who will barely cover it and when they do it's only for some controversy they've made up or if we are lucky, to cover the latest blockbuster game.

    That is so fake :)

But to answer your question, 1: yes, and 2: definitely not!
He'd be sleeping on the couch for sure!

There have been quite a few cushions thrown at heads, but that's as bad as it's ever been :)

We did play Portal 2 Co-op from different countries, with no communication methods other than widely gesticulating our little robot dudes and repeatedly firing the LOOK HERE marker at various places. That could have ended in divorce - but instead ended up with a long distance phonecall saying "JUST GO OVER THERE GADDAMMIT!!! *click*) :D
