No, character from Battlestar Galacticia TV series.
He does have the same type of age roughly and characteristics as myself though!

Windows 7 for the main desktop, Windows 7 for the media PC, Windows XP for the notebook, Windows phone 7 for the mobile. Used various iterations of linux at times, ubuntu etc. They never really stayed in the running though

    Windows 7 is the boss.

Tried Lion, didn't like it. A lot of backward GUI steps in my humble. For all the stuff apple have been accused of over the years their GUI for the most part was better for most people and widely copied. Now? Lack of permanent scroll bars by default is daft. Scroll bars give you context, size/length of document. Reverse scrolling? Sod off Apple. I'm using a laptop, not a phone. Hide the library on me, remove Java/iDVD by default? Sod off. Get rid of the ability to run slightly older software, eat more RAM, be more twitchy? Really fcuk off.

How could you ever get anything done with seven different OSes? Even a dual-boot is a pain in the hole.

XP & 7 on various machines. Going to try out Win 8 when I get the time this week.

I always die a little bit inside when a client brings me a machine that needs fixing and it's got Windows Vista on it. :(

    I use Microsoft 2008, it's the best.

My netbook with Ubuntu Linux on it gets the most usage, so I selected that. I'm currently using the development version of 12.04 "Precise", no particular reason other than my amusement. I have a Windows 7 laptop too, I'll leave that on there for specific applications such as games (Guild Wars) or scientific stuff (MATLAB).

I have to say I don't really get the attraction of Linux Mint. As already pointed out, it's only a "skin" on Ubuntu, and people seem to be using it because they don't like some of the changes to Ubuntu, such as the Unity front-end. But if that's the only reason, you can get round it in several different ways. Select "Ubuntu Classic" for a GNOME 2 GUI, or install "gnome-shell" and select "GNOME" for a GNOME 3. Install any other GUI you like e.g. the whole KDE system, and select the one you want as you log in. if I just want to do work I log in to GNUstep, which is a clone of the old NeXTSTEP GUI. Very lightweight, simple and logical.

    Because it's fantastic.

And Linux is both an OS and a kernel. I said Linux because I always change distros.
Windows 7 is the biggest fail of an os ever. It freezes crashes and boots slow. Oh yeah well linux could mean anything the way u put it just say ubuntu or fedora or arch etc
And Linux never crashes or freezes or boots slow....

Windows 7 is great imo. It makes Linux as a Desktop OS pointless except on the lowest end of machines and for specialist purposes.

I'd be with OSI on this. I'm not a poweruser by any means, but I find Windows good for some things, OS X for others. I've tried various distros of Linux over the years and while a couple were interesting I never really got into them.

With Ubuntu, itself, its now DEAD easy.

    See here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

Short version: Install Wubi into Windows - then with an ISO copy of Ubuntu itself, in the same folder as Wubi.exe, it will find it and set it up - including setting up a dual boot choice option just after turn on and boot up.

To uninstall the lot if you don't like it?
    How do I uninstall Wubi?
    * Run the uninstaller in "Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs" for Windows XP or lower or "Control Panel > Programs and Features" for Windows Vista or Windows 7. Alternatively, you can run: C:\ubuntu\Uninstall-Ubuntu.exe.
    Gone, Windows unaffected itself.

NOTE: Remember in case of very rare instances of power-cuts or some rare fault happening, to back-up any vital info first if you feel its important.

I didn't like the new interface of 11.10 so I did the above mentioned in another post and reconverted to the version 10 look.

Been with Ubuntu 10.04 for the last 16 months... I really like it when all I want to do is normal stuff. When it comes down to program installation etc. it's a long slow learning process. For the last month, nothing can install from the Software Center or the Package Manager and when I plug in the charger, it freezes about 75% of the time.
I'm about to go make a dual-boot of a cracked XP and Ubuntu 11.10.

OSX is easily the best I've used.. Emulating Windows XP inside a "space" and being able to switch OS so quickly is the perfect setup imo.

I guess. I'm too lazy to turn my machine off more than once a month to be honest.

No option in poll for 'All of the above'. The joys of working in I.T with a company that can't decide on a standard OS, so offers all of them.

Edit: Oh, don't use Mac. We're not that stupid.

Ya, one of these days I'm going to try using Linux, right after I finish start building my kit sports car and get those shelves up.

Are you sure your using windows 7 correctly and not rubbing Vaseline in your eyes and trying to play COD on the microwave? Haven't had anything like that experience.

Windows 7 is a great OS, I have it on desktop and phone.

    Ubuntu 11.10

I actually much prefer the new layout of Ubuntu. Granted that launcher annoyingly pops up sometimes when I go to click 'back' on Firefox but that's it.:)

I have XP dual-booted but I rarely (like 2/3 times a month) would need to use it.

Let me know what you think. I tried the Developers Preview on my main machine for 2 months to force myself to use it. If I was you I'd use it as a VM if you can though by forcing yourself to use it day to day you might get more experience.

I wrote a review of my first impressions:
    http://rorymon.com/blog/index.php/windows-8-preview/

At the moment I'm firmly a Windows 7 guy. I run a Linux VM and have a server setup with Server 2008 R2. Also have VMs with Windows 98, 2000, XP and Server 2003. Have used a few Apple OS's but am much happier using Windows 7, I guess a MAC would be good for a user who isn't concerned with being able to manipulate the OS much or if they are a multimeida type of person.

Used to build my own pc's but got a macbook 4 and a half years ago and love it. Originally had tiger on it then leopard then snow leopard and now even lion, still works great - so much so i've just bought an iMac and migrated from the macbook - even that just worked!

I still have an xp machine but odds are i won't be keeping it after the next crash.

Seriously though i like all os's, but i've yet had a computer that started with windows 98 and could install up to windows 7 and then transfer all docs and applications across and still be coming up roses.

Sorry to say has to be osx.:D

I'm not sure what your getting at here? Are you comparing an operating system and computer from 14 years ago to your current mac? Your statement about windows is not only unfair but complete inaccurate I'm using software and files from (almost 98) 2000 and it works fine on XP, win7 and server.

Been using Lion for the past while; can't say I'm overly impressed with it compared to Snow Leopard. Saying that, I've noticed a big decline in the quality of Apple products across the board in the last couple of years.

Windows 98 to Windows 7 is perfectly plausible. In most cases it'd be no worse than a modern netbook. Good luck installing Lion on a Mac of the same era.

For backwards compatibility in both hardware and software Windows wins hand down. There's even Windows XP mode in Windows 7 Professional for those rare few applications that absolutely need XP to run.
