satellite reciever cutting out

Hi, Ive had a FTA satellite receiver for a few years now. Just before christmas I switched the box on and it just cut out. So I disconnected everything from it and changed the fuse, plugged it in and it booted up no problem. But when I plugged the satellite cable in it cut out again. So thinking it was the box I ordered a new one but the same thing happens, It works fine untill I plugg the satellite cable in then it makes a hissing noise and cuts out.
Does anybody know what the problem is? Do I need a new satellite or a new cable?

Sounds like there's a short in the cable to the LNB (on the dish). Any chance someone loosened the F-plug on the LNB, or the receiver end? The braid in the shield is quite fine and it's easy to short out the cable unknowingly when screwing the f-plug back together. Have you checked out the cable with a meter to look for shorts? It's also possible that the cable is damaged somewhere (maybe where it hangs loose in the wind, for instance)

Most decent receivers are able to handle a short in the LNB cable - they just won't work when the shorted cabl;e is connected but will recover when the cable is unplugged.
