I think you are over reacting and definitely going way over the top.

speak to sky and they will work out something.

You will have to see out your contract. I said similar to them in the past and they wouldn't budge.

    Haven't spoken to them no.
I will ring them but did't want to go in totally blind.
(btw the intro was a joke)

Why not give the equipment to a friend, family member or relative and get them to take up the payments. If you find someone then simply ring Sky to change the direct debit details to come from their bank account.
If they want then they can cancel once the 12 months is up.

What you say when you were speaking to them??
If i say i'm emigrating and they say i have to honour the contract where does that leave me because in a couple of weeks i'll be gone. I havent got 5 months money to give them and i won't be doing it from another country. Granted i signed the contract, i knew what i was doing, but at the time i had work and the means of fulfilling it. Those days are gone. All these big institutions seem to have bother realizing this uncertainty we currently live in
I'm going to ring them tomorrow see what they say
don't think ill be giving my details though

I've renamed the thread because, quite frankly, the title is ludicrous. You're rather unlikely to go to jail. Its probably best if you ring Sky and try to explain the situation to them.

If you just leave without doing this you're likely to cause trouble for (a) the person that tries to sign up to Sky in the household next and (b) yourself if you ever come back and try to sign up to them ever again.

If you do fear the legal consequences, you should consult a solicitor.

Generally, telling Sky you're emigrating to Spain and want the box reinstalled there will have them more than willing to cancel a contract!

Simply bad advice as customer can't cancel a direct debit - you're confusing it with a standing order. A direct debit is a permission for the supplier (Sky) to tell the bank to transfer mOney from your account at their direction. The only way to unilaterally cause a direct debit to fail is to close the account or empty it of funds (including overdraft facility).

Sky wants its pound of flesh based on its contract Plus it may have a greater claim on you if you don't pay as they will want return of the equipment and a contribution to install costs if you're still within first 12 months. Best approach is to find someone who'll take the box from you and deposit the monthly fee.

I told them I was leaving the country and the best they could advise was lowering my package to the cheapest and then cancelling with a months notice at the end.

haha....They don't have agree mate! Its your money. If you instruct the bank to cancel a direct debit, they will do it, usually no questions asked!

I cancelled all my direct debits from my bank account thru online banking with NIB. I was able to see all open direct debits and cancel them one by one. Many of them hadn't been active for over a year but they could have taken money from my account as the direct debits were still open.

As was posted before, simply cancelling the DD can cause problems as Sky can blacklist the premises that the subscription was originally taken out in,wouldn't be fair on others there if they want Sky in the future.

I switched bank account numbers from mine to my parents when I got my own place and my parents kept the Sky but they pay for it where I used to before.

This could be the best solution for the op.Or if he is moving to another European country simply bring the box with him and get a dish there,it will work perfectly. There's already threads on this topic.
