I think we can safely categorise john Cale as alternative.
He released a batch of great albums in the 1970s and Paris 1919 is probably the pick of them.

I'd argue that alternative/indie started in the late 70's with labels suchas Cherry Red and Rough Trade.
Heres Thomas Leer with Private Plane which appears on a 1978 lp I have which gathered some of those independent records :Following bayern282's lead on this thread.
I'm not sure the notion of alternative/indie had been floated in the 70's but you get the drift - any tracks that stand out for you.0 -
Alt/Indie was well established 78 onwards I'd say with great labels like Factory, 4AD, Rough Trade, Stiff and Mute etc
