The 'Decreased Productivity' add-on for Chrome is ingenious. So simple, yet so effective. Very handy for work. :)

Friends and Fr Ted are pretty good programmes you can get on the computer.

    Different spelling = different item.

Photofiltre, handy basic photo editor with loads of plugins to extend it http://photofiltre.free.fr/download_en.htm

Terragen, generate and render photorealistic landscapes. The new version is incredible but has a steep learning curve so it's easier to start with the older and free version http://www.planetside.co.uk/

Firefox add-ons I've found useful are Ghostery (blocks lots of trackers while browsing, so no targetted advertising comes your way via Google etc), and Fireshot (does the same job as print screen basically, but has options of what to do with the captured image).

What about www.logmein.com? Gets my vote.

It's great if you are the IT support for relatives & friends that live miles away, especially if they are prone to reading everything on the screen to you when you're trying to help them over the phone.

Probably not Windows 8. I'd say it's Rainmeter or something similar.

    http://www.fairstars.com/cdripper/

Just a CD ripper, but it's the best one I've used on Windows by far.

    https://build.handbrake.fr/

The nightly builds of Handbrake, video converter for turning videos into .MKV or .MP4. If you want to convert to those two and others, I suggest http://avidemux.berlios.de/ .

    http://jdownloader.org/

Download manager. Downloads from all sites I've tried it on so far. The way it handles YouPoop is great. You can download the video, or just the .MP3 if you want (.TMP is the .MP3, it converts it for you). Seriously, if you download a lot, use this.

    http://celtx.com/

Script writing software. Does what it does well.

    http://voipcallrecording.com/

Record Skype calls. The caller will be on the right channel, you'll be on the left. Fiddle about with the resulting file for eight seconds in http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and you'll have both centred.

    Real Player is aggressive.
Hateful software I swore off years ago.

Zotero is a fantastic extension if you are completing a thesis or doing research. It allows you to store your citations, and can automatically create bibliographies on the fly.

Mendeley is more useful I find. I hate zotero being built into the browser to be honest

Readcube is an new one that looks nice but I've not used it

    Anyhow. Anything but Endnote......shudder....

    http://rainmeter.net/

haven't tried this out yet, but it looks like a pretty cool way to pimp your windows (seems similar to conky for linux which I have used and which is the dogs bollocks - http://conky.sourceforge.net/)

    Google earth.

Its absolutely amazing! It lets you see sattelite pictures of anywhere in the world! I was looking at Bagdad there earlier and then I looked up my address and I can see my house and my car in the driveway! ITS UNREAL!! Its not live like so you cant wave to yourself or anything like and some of the photos do be old enough, like its my old car in the driveway. But its great for seeing what the neighbours garden looks like and getting directions cos it has all the roads on it.

AND theres a ruler on it so you can measure distance as the crow flies very handy I highly recommment it.

I never saw the point of these, really. My desktop is always covered by a browser or whatever. Only time I see it is when I turn on and off the computer.

    Inline Youtube

An extension for chrome (& Firefox) that works well on forums that don't display the youtube play screen. As in you can only see the youtube link. Been a great find for me as I go on football365 a lot and they never allowed embedding youtube links but now I can play them away.
