Horrible morning for a run. Wet and windy. Tried to keep the feet dry at the start but just gave up after a mile. Couple of nice blisters to show for my efforts now.
As for the run itself the effort felt a bit too hard for the pace I was going at and the HR numbers are definitely on the high side. Not really sure why that is, dont feel as if I'm coming down with anything but the energy levels have been pretty low recently.
Glad to have it done anyway.

Bit of a hungover run this morning. Not had one of those in a while. Only chance I was goign to get today to get out though. Actually didnt feel too bad, had intended to run it fairly slow and the first mile was just over 9 mins. Pace just seemed to pick up naturally after that though and actually felt pretty good at the end.

Easy run last night in the dark and rain. Took a bit longer than it should but I always seem to find t harder to run in the dark. Was nice and handy though apart from all the floods I had to run through, really sucks when you cant see them in the dark :( Oh well I'm sure my runners will dry out eventually.

Really enjoyable run today even though the conditions were pretty miserable. The rain was coming sideways and I was having to lean sideways into the wind at times. For all of that though I really enjoyed it for some reason. Usually find it really tough on days like this.

Must be a sign of approaching madness

Overall mileage for the month not too bad I suppose as its just after the marathon.

Another enjoyable run this morning. Wasnt paying a whole lot of attention to the pace but looking back on it it was a bit all over the place. Again didnt feel too much of an effort even though the HR was up pretty high.

Only really decided to do this race on Saturday evening so I went into it with no real expectations. Figured I would try to set off at a nice pace and just see where it took me. The legs were feeling a bit heavy right from the start, definitely coudl feel the two previous days quicker paced runs - not ideal going into a 5k :) First K was a 4 min pace but it was downhill a little bit, I knew it was unlikely that I would be able to keep the pace going but just tried to focus on a runer ahead of me and try not to let the gap open up too much. While the pace did drop off I did notice that I wasnt losing ground on the guy ahead and as well no one was coming past me. By the tiem we got to 4K though the legs were really letting me know they were not happy and we were going back up the hill we came down at the start. Just tried to dig in as best I could. Finished in 21:25 so overall I'm happy enough its 20 seconds slower than my PB but its a tricky enough course and I certainly wasn't properly prepared for it with a coupel of harder runs leadign into it.

    Splits
    4.00
    4.13
    4.25
    4.25
    4.23

Definitely some signs of improvement though. It was the legs that let me down mpre than my aerobic base.

Another 1.5 miles between warm up/down

A nice easy run today. Just the usual 4 miles. Taking it pretty handy this week with the Half on Saturday. Legs felt fine and overall a pretty effortless run.

Just a nice 3 miles today to keep the legs ticking over before Saturday. Want to get to the start line as fresh as I can. Not really put in any specific training for this but still may as well try to give myself the best chance at it.

Was seriously windy out there though and was tough running into it.

Third time in 12 months down in the South East.

This one was a bit disappointing again but I'm not overly bothered. I haven't really put in the miles since Dublin and I seem to be coming down with something. First couple of miles were grand but fairly quickly after that I was feeling the pace. A quick look at the HR after 3 showed it up at 183. I backed off the pace a bit to try and get it back down into something manageable but it wasnt happening. Was still at 181 after 5 miles. Legs were not feeling great and the breathing was gone a bit ragged as well. Way more so that it should have been. Just decided then to cruise round and forgt the time. Actually kinda enjoyed it after that, had a few words with a good few other runners, mostly as they were going by me though

Finished just under 1:46 but really not that bothered about it. Slightly worried about the high heart rate though, hopefully its just down to it being the end of the year and that I am coming down with a cold or something. think I'm going to pretty much take this week off, have christmas party and other things on.

Hopefully I will still get over the 1500 miles for the year

Took a full week off after Waterford, longest spell without running for over a year. Went back out yesterday morning with the intention of doing a handy 5 miles. Roads were really badly iced over in parts. Nearly fell on my over sized ass twice in the first mile and a half and figured at that point it wasnt worth getting killed over. Turned round and headed for home.

4 miles at lunch today. Was a nice run even if I wasnt feeling really on top of things. Lungs were grand just the legs felt a little off. Thought I would be flying after a week off but guess not. Still it was nice to be back out there again.

Mixed it up a little bit today. Route I haven't done in a while and ran it just on feel. Shins were a bit sore at the start but once I hit a bit of a downhill and let th elegs go they were grand, never bothered me after that.
Just going to run for fun until the new year and then pick up a plan for Connemara. No idea what I will base it on yet though.

Just the usual 4 at lunch again. fairly breezy out there.

Really find it hard to focus whem I dont have any immediate target. Its nice to be able to just run but I really do need structure to make sure I'm not just going through the motions.

Calfs were really bothering me when I was out today. Stopped a few times to stretch them but it didnt seem to have any long lasting impact. Couple hundred meters and off they went again. Pretty annoying really, dont know why it is that this keeps cropping up.

Still I'm sure it could be worse it didn't stop me from getting out.

Nice handy pre christmas run with the ads this morning. Took things nice and easy with a good bit of banter. Calfs were still pretty sore though. Will get them looked at after the holidays. Think they just need a good rub.

Short run in the dark tonight. Spent most of the morning and early afternoon in Athenry at the 10K so only managed to get in 3 miles. Wasn't going to bother but as usual feel much better after going out.

Pace was nice and easy but it was pretty windy on the way home.

First longish run for a few weeks. just over 10 miles. Pace was very relaxed early on but picked it up to around 8:15s for the last couple of miles. Felt pretty good and could have kept going for longer.

No real problems with the calfs but alittel soreness on the left knee. nothign out of the prdinary though.

Didn't get out yesterday until after 7 but it turned out pretty well. Worst of the wind and rain had passed by then and it was actually fairly nice out. Pace as usual for me in the dark was a bit slower than I would have liked but better to be out than sitting at home anyway.

Time to look back at the year just gone and overall I supose its a case of what might have been. While the early part of the year went well with some good races once the Autumn came in the performances just dried up for one reason or another.
The overriding feeling from the year is one of disappointment, I set 3 targets for the year and missed them all. Some of my races this year just were not good enough, I'm excluding DCM from that as that was just one of those days totally beyond my control, and who knows what would have happened there. That doesn't ease the memory though.

Performance high point of the year was in Craughwell at the 10 miler, just everything seemed to come right on the day.
Most enjoyable race was in Connemara just a great day out and I can't wait to get back there.
Worst performance of the year was at the National Half, just as everything went right in Craughwell then everything went wrong here.
Low point of the year was DCM, I felt I was well prepared but for my back to go really left me frustrated.

But anyway out with the old and in with the new. I'm going to close this lof off and I will open a new one for 2012.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and the support when things were not going well. Lets hope we all hit our targets in 2012.

Just reading your assessment of your running year I would agree that you flew around the course in Craughwell & I would have put money back then on some of your other PB's falling later in the year. I couldn't hazard a guess as to why that didn't happen as your training seemed to go pretty well for the rest of the year. Surely some of them PB's are going down in 2012 ;)
