FORMER Environment Minister Dick Roche had a lucky escape when his luxury car burst into flames on St Stephen's Day.
The former Fianna Fail minister and senator was visiting family in Co Wexford with his wife Eleanor and was driving towards Dublin when he noticed something was amiss with his 2010-registered E200 Mercedes.
The driver of a car behind him had flashed his lights to warn him. Mr Roche pulled into the car park of the Ferrycarrig Hotel in Wexford.
"He didn't realise something was wrong until he got out to investigate and the car erupted in flames very quickly," said a source.
"The fire really took hold then. By the time the fire brigade got there, the car was destroyed, burnt to a crisp.
"It looks like it was a mechanical fault," revealed the source."
Mr Roche and his wife were shaken but otherwise unscathed. He could not be reached for comment last night.

would never wish physical harm upon anyone, but glad to see him get some sort of comeuppance

Thats weird. The oul mercs are usually pretty sturdy.

How is this going to affect him, he will claim his insurance, he has lost nothing.

It's an 2L mid range Mercedes. A luxury car it is not. A luxury car is an S Class, 7 Series or LS460h. A rich person would've bought the 4.2 twin turbo AMG version. A middle class low level exec buys an E200.

Let's not infer in any way that this was a made up story from this honourable person to torch their own brand new (well, almost) car to get cash.

No they could not. A small fire in a car, slow enough to allow Roche park it, before it took hold. He actually parked it close enough to damage the building, the pillock!

Roche and his wife were in no danger whatsoever.

And how many 4.2 twin turbo AMG's have you seen around the place?? In Ireland an E200 is considered a luxuary car, and compared to most other cars it is luxurious!! Sure it might not be the biggest engine variant available but that doesn't mean it does have a high spec and build quality!! And tbh I'd quite happily own and drive one!

E200s whether petrol or diesel are a big heavy comfortable SLOW turnip of a car for fat balding bookies and the like.

Luxury they ain't, Celtic Bubble or Celtic Bust.

Yes, this belongs in the box along with the statement from the tour guide I overheard in 2006 telling some Americans that "Most new cars in Ireland are purchased by rental companies, and then bought second hand by the thrifty Irish"

Ignoring the fact that they were not on the motorway, and not thinking of the children, how, exactly, would bring on a motorway have made any difference?

As pointed out elsewhere, the car is a rather slow diesel powered lump and, as such, couldn't explode. Any fire was gradual and the Roches had sufficient time to stop. They would have had sufficient time to stop wherever they were.

It'll be interesting to see if Roche gets one huge bill from the Co Council for the Fire Brigade, or does he have special exemption?

Yes, considering the article implies that they were completely oblivious to any problem with the car until someone else driving along caught their attention.

You haven't read the piece. The car started to lose power and slow down. Roche was in no danger. This article is just another Indo piece, over dramatised and over exaggerated. Not much more than any breakdown.
