Kev your banging your head off a brick wall and you won't get through to them.

That's just an insulting way to debate. It is equivalent to taking your ball and going home. I don't see what is crazy about suggesting it is more difficult to make it to the top of a sport with an exponentially higher participation rate. Take your own experience....
I've never played soccer, rugby, GAA or golf - or even tiddly winks on any kind of level. But I've trained with and fought guys are very high levels, and like you I've seen a few come from the ranks and almost from day one they're head and shoulders above the rest - they've a spark, an edge to their game that you can't train into them.

In soccer, the amount of soccer players with an "edge" is far, far higher than women's boxing purely because the participation rates are so much higher. Anybody that makes it to a top division team in soccer will have faced off thousands upon thousands of guys with an edge. You don't get to United, Barcelona, Real Madrid etc without having stand out talent. That is my point. I am not talking about what happens when they become world class athletes, I am talking about the relative difficulty of getting to the stage where you are recognised as a world class talent in soccer.

Whereas, with all due respect, that is not the case in women's boxing. It is not as difficult to get to a world class level because it is an emerging sport. If women's boxing increases in popularity, the overall talent pool will increase. Women that play tennis, sprint etc will take it up. So women that are currently "world class" in amateur boxing, may not be considered world class if they appeared in 10, 20 years time. The same way that it would not have been as difficult to become a top soccer player in the late 19th century as participation rates were different. Participation rates were lower, the bar to entry was lower. You only competed against people within your area/country (within reason), whereas now they are competing with the best talent worldwide to make it to top level football. That is why I say it is more difficult to become a top level footballer. Think of how many talented footballers that don't make it.

Also, in case you or Kevin Duffy feel like I don't "get it". I understand his point, however it is not taking into account the relative difficulty of getting to that stage. Nor am I in any way saying that Katie Taylor is not a world class athlete. I would say there are GAA players that are world class athlete as well. I would also say the very same thing about the relative ease of making it to the top level in the GAA compared to soccer. Note: Relative ease does not equal easy.

And just to return to the actual topic, people comparing their sparring with average people in boxing, MMA etc and saying how that proves they could beat an actual world class athlete is laughable.

Some amount of begrudgery from the Walter Mitty crowd on this thread.

I'd say how Irish of them, but really, we've no clue where they come from.

being 6ft 5 and weighing 18 stone, I would fancy my chances :pac:

I'd love to see the overconfident few get a shot at fighting her.

I've seen high quality lads of that size get completely shut out whilst sparring to a high intensity with Katie. International heavies, and super heavyweight fighters. Lads who would blow you over with a sneeze :D

She would most certainly stop you before you heard the final bell, she would have landed 3,4,5 punches and be gone before you can even straighten you arm.

@teednab-el Gina Carano is MMA, I wouldn't stand a chance and 99% of people in this country wouldn't have a hope either. Katie Taylor isn't MMA and as such, Gina Carano would make relatively light work of her in street fight.

Id take Gina though coz I'm a tough b*stard. :-D

You don't know what kung fu is.

All you need to know is kung fu is of no practical use in a real fight.

Tiger claw or no tiger claw.

The point being made is because Randy Coutre and other proffessional MMA fighters can tackle someone easily then your average person could do the exact same. It's ridiculous really.

So you don't think an average guy who is twice the size of Katie Taylor couldn't take her down.

Tackling someone half the size of you is not so hard, give it a try.

Has she got a good sprawl we don't know about.

Ask Rashad Bobino how his street brawl with Roger Huerta went. And Bobino was a pro athlete with an eighty pound advantage.

Gina Carano isn't even that great by womens MMA standards, she's just the poster girl because she's pretty compared to the rest of them. Put Katie against Cristiane Santos and watch her get the **** pummeled out of her by an honest to god fighter.

As i said already, boxing really only works against someone who is willing to solely box you.

Ya i saw that a few months ago, Bobino was drunk but anyway, anyone can be sucker punched.

Still wouldn't stop a guy twice the size of Taylor from taking her down.

Kung-Fu is just a generic word that people use to talk about Chinese martial arts(of which there are a few hundred). The Chinese don't even call it Kung-Fu(Just means hard work, or alot of effort spent to master. Which could be used for anything from martial arts and riding a bike to cooking.) they call it Wu-Shu(literally martial art).

What you need to know is it is practically useless compared to BJJ, Muay thai, boxing, wrestling etc.

@ Bambi, Don't misquote me, I didn't say the above at all. Careful with your use of quotations. It wasnt me that said that. Look back over thread again.

Kung Fu is a martial art that is practiced without contact.

I take it you've never heard of Sanshou/Sanda, the Chinese full-contact format, or watched the Art of War, the Chinese version of MMA.

As for your comparison with other art watch Liu Hailong, a sanshou fighter, in the many contests against Muay Thai, or of Cung Le in the UFC, another Sanda fighter.

    Here's one for you...

Take down defence is all about having a good sprawl?.

Your own ability to do what exactly?? to beat up a woman :p

Its just a matter of fact, Katie has put beatings on some of the lads on the irish international teams.

Fancying your chances really shows how you know f*ck all about the sport of boxing.

Were the guys 6' 5 and 18 stone.

Were they allowed to drag her to the ground and elbow her in the face?

Even drunk, Rashad Bobino was a professional athlete who specialised in taking huge hits and collisions, trying to start a fight with a guy who was eighty pounds lighter than him. The lesson to take away? Training in MMA beats an eighty-pound weight advantage. Given that, I'd feel fairly confident in saying that being a top-level boxer, combined with the gulf in physical conditioning, would mean she'd drop anyone without a decent grounding in fighting disciplines.

I've no fighting experience - I weigh about 40 pounds more than her, I reckon I'd take her in a fight - Not sure in a boxing ring.

hmmm have you ever been in the ring?

the speed and endurance of someone Katie's size is not to be taken lightly

they'd be 6'3+ lean muscle, fast, hit hard and yes she has taken many of them to the cleaners and been competitive with Irelands best male fighters.

I don't imagine many of Irelands best fighters are posting here.

Size and weight is only half the battle

it all depends on the type of fight really.
