why can't an atheist or non catholic go to a pub for a meal or drink? Wouldnt go myself but people should always be free to do things . Some people worked all the way up to christmas eve and may want to party at a club or pub today.

i have dj'd the 23rd, 24th, and am going to be djin the 26th through to the 1st, wouldn't mind few pints in a club tonight if one was open!

Ever consider that the bar staff may enjoy the day off. A lot of pubs are family run affairs and to expect them to put off their family Christmas together so that a few sad sacks can head to the pub for a few pints is ridiculous.

That said it would be nice if communities organised someplace where those who are on their own for the day can get together and have someone to chat to.

What?the owners have a choice of whether to open or not(if they get the licence)they arent forced.it's amazing that because of religion at certain times of the year we cant do things that theres is no problem with for the rest of the year.

Who would force them to work ? It could be written into law that anyone who doesnt want to work the day cannot be made to or persecuted as a result of not working. Maybe only a small percentage of places would open but i beleive people shpuld have choice of attending a pub. Not everyone wants to stay at home all day with relatives. Even tourismm could benefit if restaurant and pubs were open christmas day allowing Ireland to be a christmas destination for people.
I agree that there should be places where people alone can go for the day and bring a bottle of wine . Maybe the GAA or church parishes could lend their halls and volunteers would do a hour or two to supervise and facilitate.

a lot of people who get up in arms over the fact that pubs are closed 2 days out of the year are for want of a better word sad sacks. If you can't go without the pub 2 days out of 365 then there is something wrong with you.

There are ways to deal with rogue employers through special licensing for day, fines etc. People over the border in Northern IReland or across water inUK and Europe seem to get on fine with chrostmas opening. In fact for low paid bar stafff it may be a great way to make an extra few bob through triple time pay and working on xmas day when everyone is happy would be a attractive to many. You can still have dinner with family before heading to work

A lot of employers would merely abuse it and force their employees to work. It would most likely be a situation where the bar owner sat at home with his family having his traditional Christmas day while he forced his employees to work. A number of employees may be quite happy to work the day but in many more rural pubs it where there are only 1 or 2 barmen then they could be faced with a situation where they have no choice but work.

There are only 2 days in the entire year where bars are closed, people who think that it's such a major infringement on their rights really need to find something more important to complain about.

I work in the bar trade, i'm not sure if theres any bar staff getting triple time anymore or even double time on bank holidays. Certainly not in my town anyway. It's gone back to minimum wage and be happy with it. Massive setback from what i used to be earning. Also i agree with the above poster, people in different trades and jobs get guarenteed holidays, i only get Good Friday and Christmas. Can i not enjoy my days off? I wonder how the banks would like it if i said i wanted to use them on their 'bank holidays' or people from any number of other businesses that close on bank holidays for that matter.

Because you live in Ireland. We have traditions, decades if not centuries old. It doesn't matter if you don't agree with their origins - it's how we do things. Lets be fair, most of our traditions such as no buying alcohol til 12pm sunday, or no pubs on christmas are fairly harmless. It's not how it's done the world over, but who wants a horribly homogenous world anyway?

Amazing why you cant do with out a pub for one day. even at 11,30am this morning i saw a few lads go in the side entrance of the pub in my village and the owner thinks butter would,nt melt in his mouth, but breaks the law on xmas day
to serve and money grab from the local alcos.

I would have no desire to spend today in a pub but I appreciate that plenty of others might and I find it completely reprehensible that, in this year 2011, that an entire country's freedom of choice is dictated to by one set of religious beliefs.

I was born a Catholic, raised a Catholic but by no means am I blind to the hypocrisy of the Catholic church so adamantly demanding respect whilst simultaneously trampling all over other people's preferences
