USB Connection with Samsung Galaxy Mini

Have a Samsung Galaxy Mini and when I attach it to my laptop with the USB, it bleeps but nothing happens. It is not recognising that it is attached and the android doesnt come up on the phone screen asking me about mass storage. I have downloaded kies but still nothing happening. What am I doing wrong. What am I doing wrong. In settings/wireless and network settings/ tethering and portable hotspots - I have ticked USB tethering.

Please help as it is driving me mad !!!

go into settings,applications,development and click usb debugging. then when it's connected with the usb a screen will come up and you click usb mass storage . job done
