Where is the starter in a Mazda 626

I know, it's a silly question to some, but I need to get at it if possible. It's a 1997 Mazda 626 (1.8) and I have a sticky/lazy starter, but I can't see where it is. If it's handy enough to get at, I could take it out and put in a different one. I'm out of work so can't afford to leave it into a garage, but I've always serviced the car myself, did the brakes etc. so I can manage the basics/easy stuff.

    Thanks all. :)

    I've got a '94 626 & had starter trouble a couple of years back.

I remember the mechanic putting the car on the lift & taking it out from underneath the engine.

Can't be more specific than that. Sorry.

    No worries chief.

I tried Google, tried to get a PDF of a service manual, but no joy. :(

    I don't think there's a Haynes manual either. I looked.

    They must be too reliable!:D

In general, they are in fairness. But when something like this happens, you're kinda screwed.

Not popular enough for a Haynes I'd say. I think there's a shared manual for the previous model and the ford probe. Is it definitely the starter? I had trouble with my ignition switch. Starter wouldn't turn at all without jiggling the key in the ignition.

I'm 99% sure it's the starter, BUT....the missus says it works for her when she jiggles the key. Having said that, it only happens in the winter, it's fine in the summer, so I'm thinking the wet and cold might be sticking the starter.

Ya, give starter a few taps and see if that works.
