Connecting to UPC through Windows XP

Hi I have an old laptop here that doesn't seem to be able to connect to UPC, I was on the phone to them before and the guy changed the SSID and the encryption key to WEP and it seemed to connect no problem. The issue was that it would connect but would appear as an unidentified network and there was no option to set it to home public or work. This was all done last week however today all the settings including all my porting were somehow reverted back to their default settings and the new SSID was changed back to its original state. I called them earlier but they said the technicians for the Thompson router were in a meeting and he couldn't help me so I was hoping someone here could help me out so if it happens again I'll know what to do. Thank you.

I'm sorry it's actually Windows Vista not XP

This is a Windows Issue, not Broadband. There is a known problem with Vista and WPA security. If there's a fix/workaround, this is the place to find it. Thread moved to Windows forum.

make sure windows has all its updates
make sure you have the latest driver for the wireless card

confirm that the card/drive have WPA support as some older ones don't in which case get you can use a USB / PCMCIA card

there may be a hotfix too, but rule out the above first

Yes you were right it is a WPA issue I rang UPC and they helped me change the encryption key from WPA2 to WEP and now it is working fine. Thank you for the help.

May as well turn off your wireless security as WEP can be cracked qutie easily!
