Adding an external Harddrive to a network

    I have Upc internet with a thomson wireless box.

    My external harddrive is not a wireless one.

    Can I set up a network and view my files wirelessly on the
    harddrive by connecting it to the USB port on the router?

    Dont think so unless your router is running some kind of network operating system.

    You'll need a NAS.

    It would depend on the wireless router. I've no idea about the box you have. I have a NETGEAR N600 Wireless Dual Band router (Model:WNDR3400vr2) and it is easily hooked up to drive. Fully accessible from my laptop and other computers in the house, and the box assures me I can access via an android phone with wifi, tv with wifi etc.

    Was that supplied by an ISP or did you buy it yourself?

    Bought it myself. The stock one that came with eircom wasn't up to the job. I've yet to see a stock one with usb sharing.

    It was simple with the NETGEAR one, just plugged it in to the usb slot, and there was a utility on the router that allowed me to connect via "Run" then \\readyshare. But I imagine that command is pretty specific to the NETGEAR router.

    Ah i was thinkin theres no way an irish isp would send out that kind of kit haha. Upc send out cisco routers dont they? Meanin yer mans is store bought, so it probably can. I was thinkin if it was sent out by his Isp then the usb port might only be for firmware updates like set top boxes.
