CONMEN are calling to people's homes in north Kerry on the pretence of installing the new Saorview aerials, gardaí have warned.

A number of people in the north Kerry area have been approached by men claiming that they are there to install the new digital RTÉ aerials on their homes, despite the occupants never having requested assistance from any company.

Gardaí in Listowel are now warning the public to demand identification from any person claiming to be from a TV company or otherwise. This warning comes as gardaí appeal for safety in all areas in the run-up to the festive period.

"Legitimate companies will never simply call into a person's home without a request for help," Sergeant Declan Horan said. "So we would ask people to be vigilant at all times, request identification and write down a description of the person immediately. Better again, don't be afraid to take the license number of any car. Gardaí ask that people remain vigilant for any suspicious vehicles in their area in general over the period."

    This was bound to happen.
Unfortunately a vast section of the public, particulary eldery and more vulnerable people, do not understand what Saorview is all about.
It's a pity the Gardai did not point out that in most cases people do not need a new aerial.
They should stress that people should contact a local aerial professional who is a member of a recognised trade body, such as the ISAA ,for advice.
