I'm surprised a thread hasn't been started on this (or maybe there has, i'm not searching) but this is just another incident in a huge line of facepalm incidents for Ireland and its government.

So let me get this straight. The MEP's do not want this chap to take up the position on the European Court of Auditors.

I'd be pretty certain, after being at the heart of the €3.6billion accounting error that the Irish public would not like to see him appointed to this position.

So why are the government insistent on him getting this position?

This man was present the night of the bank guarantee scheme and during the EU-IMF talks.

Thats says it all. Jobs for the boys, there's a problem lets ship him off to Europe.

Well you've got to see their point really, (the MEPs who don't want him) he is after all, quite possibly the single most incompetent man in europe. He oversaw and advised on practicaly every spectacular monetary fiasco that the last government embarked on. He got his sums wrong to the tune of nearly 4 billion and even when his mistake was pointed out to him, it took him a year to correct it.
He epitomises everything that is wrong with the civil service in this country, he should be sacked, whipped maybe, possibly hung, but certainly not promoted and handed a sack of money.

    I
So why are the government insistent on him getting this position?

Maybe they're hoping he can make accounting errors in our favour?

Is there a possibility that he was promised something by the outgoing government?

    Just thinking out loud...

People are assuming that the "error" was unintentional. €3.6 billions garners alot of intrest over a year. It had to be somewhere.

There's a thread on it since yesterday in the Politics forum.

But yes, he was shameless to apply for a position, when he clearly was not even competent for his recent post.

There is something going on in my opinion.

Can't see how or why the government are standing behind him despite being rejected by the MEP's. The want it to go to a further vote.

They want shot of him cos they know he's an idiot, but they haven't got the balls to sack him. That's what's going on.

€276,000 job for Mr Cardiff despite earlier rejection.

As news reports go, a huge amount of political favours have been called in by the Irish Government to get Cardiff elected. In fact it could be a case of putting all eggs in one basket as some of the Government Opposition hope that nothing goes wrong in the next few years with the Bailout as we have dealt our hand.
Marta Andreasen, former EU Chief Accountant and UKIP MEP, said that she had hoped common-sense would prevail. "The evidence was self-explanatory: Mr Cardiff, whilst in charge of the Irish Finance Ministry oversaw a 3.6 billion euro accounting error," she said.

"This is not pennies we are talking about here. Mr Cardiff's reward for this blunder is a six figure salary in an EU Institution tasked with ensuring the financial probity of the multi-billion Euro EU budget. It would be farcical were the matter not so serious.

"The political pressure and interference exerted to ensure his appointment today, notably by the Irish Government on the largest group in the Parliament the EPP, means that any integrity the Auditors may have had prior to his appointment now lies in tatters."

All to get rid of him from the Dept of Finance. Jobs for the boys is alive and well.:mad:

I reckon Enda hoping he can make a few similar mistakes in his new job, maybe an accounting error with €3.6billion ending up in the Irish bank account, by mistake of course.
