Scary stuff. My thoughts go out to those affected. Belgium is a lovely country with lovely people but there's a small minority of nutjobs everywhere I guess.

My first thought was an Anders Breivik style attack.

It seems like someone (group) is trying to start something, what a terrible thing to do though, regardless of why.

My first thought was an Anders Breivik style attack.

I haven't seen mention of nationality yet but I was thinking along the lines of that attack in India, specially as it's a group doing it.

Two people have been killed and up to 64 injured after gunmen opened fire and threw grenades at a crowd in the Belgian city of Liege.
Police said at least two men, armed with a Kalashnikov and grenades, were involved in the attack.
The attack took place around noon on Saint-Lambert square, home to the town's courthouse and located near a busy Christmas market.
One of the assailants was killed. There are reports another man fled inside the courthouse.
Police said several "suspect" objects were found on the square and that police bomb disposal experts had been alerted.
RTL-TV1 television earlier said the gunmen threw stun grenades into the courthouse while one was thrown at a bus shelter in the area.

A gun and grenade attack in the centre of the Belgian city of Liege has killed at least two people and wounded 47 including a toddler, media say.

Witnesses say a man in his 40s threw grenades at a bus stop in Place Saint Lambert, a busy square. At least two other men are thought to be involved.

Reports say one of the attackers is among the dead. Local media say another has been detained, while a third is involved in a stand-off with police.

It is not clear who the attackers are.

There are reports of a fourth man escaping the scene.

TV images showed blood splattered across the cobblestones.

Medical staff are said to be attending to some of the injured in the courthouse.

Seven of them are in a serious condition, and doctors at a city hospital are trying to save the life of an 18-month-old boy injured in the attack.

Roads into the centre of the city have been sealed off. Police helicopters are hovering overhead and explosives experts are on their way to the square.

A TV report said many shops in the city centre had closed their doors, with customers trapped inside.

Place Saint Lambert is a busy intersection, served by hundreds of buses daily. It hosts an annual Christmas market which attracts some 1.5 million visitors a year.

No reason could ever be worth killing anyone and injuring so many innocent people.

Especially if what BBC says is true that a toddler was hurt. That's just sickening.

According to the Belgian paper Le Soir
Nordine Amrani, the deceased author of the killing of Liege, is known by the police. In our archives, this article talks about his conviction three years earlier: "The Criminal Court sentenced, Tuesday, Nordine Amrani, Liégeois a 29-year to 58 months in prison for possession of a dozen weapons and parts 9500 and 2800 for the cultivation of cannabis plants. The court has also fined 11,000 euros and gave the forfeitures in the amount of 76,500 euros. "
