Vectra Estate Query

Hi lads

Buying an estate in the new year 07/08 and I was all set on getting either a Vectra, Passat or Octavia. Has to be diesel.

Very very hard to find an octavia so that is out really ,even though they are a great car and so many love them on here.

Passat - second chocie but no my first. here is why?

Vectra - I read the engine is a Fiat diesel. When I heard this I am not too keen at all. fix it again tomorrow and all that. Surely this engine must be poor?

anyone know much about the engine? Is it reliable? Economical? Price of the parts?

Should I still go with the vectra even with this engine?

The fiat diesel is a fine unit, don't let that put you off, the fact that the vectra is donkeys years old should be more of a detterant.

WHats your budget?

Really? Why is it so old? around 8-9k would be my budget.

That model came out in 2002 and it wasnt ground breaking 9 years ago, which would give you an idea where it was in 2008

Vectra c estate is called a signum if you are looking for one a 1.9 diesel 6 speed is a grand motor with cheap prices both for buying and resale

Signum is shorter and has 2 rear sets

The Signum would be hard to find I'd say.

Sounds like the passat might be a better option if the Vectra is so old.

Your budget will leave you a bit limited if you need 07 08, a passat will be out of the question.

From the condition of the steering wheel and the damage done on the dash under it I'd say that is an ex taxi with higher mileage than it is displaying

Signum is more or less a 5 door hatch of the saloon, although there was a 5dr hatch version available, the Signum was built in Germany and was aimed at a different bracket and was looked at to be a more luxurious car than the Vectra with 2 rear seats and more toys. Never really took off but were a great used buy.

Agree with colmmcm that the vectra is a bit dated but cant deny their used car price and size of boot

The Vectra platform was lengthened for the estate version. It shares that with the Signum afaik.

This one has me a bit stumped........

There were only 86004 cars registered in Dublin in 2007, but that is a RHD Opel, with clock in KM (apparently), with an import reg number

Looks to have main dealer plate surrounds on it, so unless it was a UK import and someone has Opelized it, but cartell has it as an Opel

Have a look for a SRi Vectra Estate, looks a bit better than the boggo spec.

The Signum is a different car altogether and if you're willing to only have 4 seats they can be picked up for nothing if you can find one.

No the engine is the the best part of the Vectra. The rest of the car is not great but the engine is a great unit. Far nicer IMHO than VAG's diesel.

Think I will avoid the Vectra now if it is so old. The Passat might be the best option. They seem a great car.

Anyone on here have the Passat estate?

You won't get a new shape passat within budget, so the shape you'll be looking at came out in 1997. 5 years before the vectra

Also. Early passats (05-06) have more than their fair share of problems.

There are plenty of 06 new shape TDI Passats going around

I think Colm is talking about the Passat's with the 2.0TDI PD engine, there's a reason they're cheap. Many of them have terrible engine trouble with injectors etc. A 1.9TDI passat should be ok. though I have heard some of the early models of the '05 Passat had problems with the electronic parking brake too.

Fuel pumps on the 1.9 go too, fairly expensive (had one go on me in norn Ireland a few years back, limped home)

Steering racks are troublesome too I believe

The Saab 9-3 is based on the Vectra as Saab was owned by GM who also own Opel, and they both use the same Fiat diesel engine. I cannot imagine the Saab being a whole lot more expensive to service than the Vectra unless you plan to stick with main dealers.

Also 05 - early 07 Passats are known to have problems, potential to break your heart and wallet.
