I heard that Kemmy is closing at 10pm starting in the next few months to cut costs so thats another lab not accessible at night

Was Kemmy ever open past 10pm? I was almost sure the doors were locked before then.

    kinda wrong there buddy,

csis servers are off limits to everyone, unless inside csis itself,

I had a brief discussion with our course director Norah about being allowed ssh access from home so we could do our mySQL stuff from there and use the tables on csis server, she wants this also, but it the csis admin who shall remain nameless but we all know who, will not allow it, she reckons he reckons we'd try do something untoward to server, its merely a security thing they wont allow us ssh from the outside, absolute bollox tbf,

Nameless fecker! But yeah, that makes more sense, I just heard in passing that you could do the mySQL stuff via skynet yesterday.... think twas Sid_Justice who said, although he may have been referring to something different that I misinterpreted tbf.

But its a pain in the hole, and we have all suffered fro it as a result..

also you dont need linux, yes we use the linux terminal for our ssh sessions, but you could easily do it on windoze with PuTTY :D
    [/QUOTE]

A gigantic pain in the testicles, correct.
Yeah.... I've heard tale of PuTTY but the way she explained on how to get set up on her lab sheet scared me away tbh. :pac:

Because to the best of my knowledge, you can only ssh to a CSIS server using skynet, which as I've told you, I'm not a member of, nor do I feel obligated to join a society for my academic work. Also, the server in question require linux, which AFAIK isn't available on the library PC's.

Can you boot from a flash-drive on library computers? I know you need an admin password on the CSIS ones but I've been able to boot up from them in the few ECE labs I've used.

Not sure, but even if you could, you wouldn't be able to access the information stored on the CSIS servers.

Reckon we'll all just have to make peace with the fact that for the foreseeable future there's not going to be a general computer lab open 24hours. There is probably more important expenses for the Uni in fairness. (doesn't make me happy about it though :pac: )

Back in the day there were a few labs that were open 24 hours especially coming up to exams etc.
I'd agree with the poster who said it wasn't a great idea. Most of the people using them were very bad with their time management (myself included) and shouldnt have had to use them. The rest were generally playing Quake or arsing around which meant they had to use them at some point for asssignments as well.

Now, the confusion about members of Skynet having access to CSIS servers is strange. Skynet members have access to Skynet servers, where websites can be hosted etc and where stuff like mysql is available, however these are NOT the CSIS servers. (That was my understanding of it back in the day)

Not sure who the admins in CSIS are now but being honest from and administration and security perspective I can see where they are coming from in relation to restricted access to their servers/software.

Sorry, I was probably the cause of that confusion because I misinterpreted a post in another thread. :)

do you mean boot a live distro from usb, ?? Im not sure, but you can boot portable apps from your own stick on windoze, works fine, I use portable_apps on my usb stick, you can then use the latest chrome/firefox and lots of other really handy and up to date apps UL dont provide on UL 'puters

Myself and Aoife have raised this with the VPAR. Apart from the money aspect, which saw Venus 24 hour cease about 4 years ago, the University made a similar argument to markflynn101.

It was difficult enough to get the extra hour for the Library at exam time which I hope we can replicate next semester, but on the basis of feasibility I specifically refused to promise 24 hour library access in my manifesto, it doesn't mean I wouldn't work towards it, but I'm interested in deliverables, not fantasy.

    That's perfectly cool. :)

Something to look into though would be maybe getting the CSIS opening to the same hours as the library. It's a bit annoying when you have to stop whatever work/study you were doing at 8:45 and move to somewhere else. Not saying 24 hour access right away (or even in the forseeable future), but keeping the place open til whatever time the library closes (not just at exam time, but for the full semester) would definitely be a help imho.

Does anyone know if the postgrad reading room across from the fishtalk is open 24/7. Alternatively, is there another room on campus where I could study during night.

    Thanks.
