Just noticed today that the lid was off the tank and with the rain we have had lately , a fair bit of water must have got in to the tank, how bad is this ?????

Only bad once it gets into the boiler.

Get yourself a oil extractor from argos, drop the hose to the bottom of the tank and drain until kero starts to come.

As Billy said above, if you dont, the oil pump will sieze and stop, ie the burner wont fire.
