I bought Northhanger Abbey by Jane Austen, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James today, for a grand total of €10 in an Amsterdam book market. Was a bit disappointed when the vendor said "Usually it's just women who read Austen" though, he saw right through my manly exterior. I really liked Emma, and have a soft spot for a lot of soppy 19th century literature. IS THAT SO WRONG?!

Reading Chronicles of Amber at the moment - supposedly a classic fantasy book and holding up under scrutiny so far.

Surely I've redeemed myself there :p

The book thief is absolutely amazing. One of the best books I've read in a long time. It was one of the few books I cried while reading. Took me a while to get into it but once I did I couldn't put it down.

The only thing I've been reading lately is college related stuff

I've always wondered was roland your name or a dark tower reference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,924 ✭✭✭✭RolandIRL

i changed my name a week or two ago from Roland Deschain :D

I got started on em in a pure awkward fashion. the aunt bought me the fifth book, after that could only find the sixth in the library, and then found the fourth in a book shop. must buy the first 3 and last one and read em through in the right order. besides the stand it's the best stuff he's written.

you haven't read the first three? O_o i could never start a series midway through.

I've read a good bit of King, but some of his works i find an awful chore to get through (Under the Dome was one of many)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,291 ✭✭✭Junco Partner

It wasn't my choice. If left to my own devices I would have probably discovered it myself through reading his others as the dark tower seems to be the series that ties have his output together, with all the references and connections to his other books. duma key and cell are two recent books of his that i can't reccomend enough. and the stand all 1,400 pages of it haha

Duma Key is utter tripe. I found the plot to be very contrived and stupid. Didn't like it one bit. I prefer his books that link to the DT series, they always seem better than his usual stuff (not always though, The Talisman was a chore to get through for me)

Just started "The Magic of Reality" by Richard Dawkins, I'm not one for enjoying illustrations though, could do with less of those.

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare! It came out Tuesday and I made a point to go buy it yesterday. Haven't been that excited about a book release in a very long time. Currently devouring it in every spare minute :D

Finished the Hunger Games, sort of not sure what to do with my life now...
Oh yeah, I've got Game of Thrones to start!

I decided lately to step aside from my usual reading patterns, (ie. The Black Magician Trilogy, Tolkien's works, The Abhorsen Series etc.) and have decided to read some of the Classics... Just finished the Count of Monte Cristo and I must say it is probably the best book I have ever read... Actually, there is no probably, it is the best book I have ever read... It's a revenge story beyond all others, and while there are romantic storylines, they are not sappy or cliché...It is 117 chapters long so it might seem like a bit of a chore, but it is not like that once you get into it... EVery so often, Dumas seems to go off on a tangent, but those tangent subplots are amazing tales in their own right!!!
