24HR Computer Labs for Undergrads

Hi,

Simple question, are there any 24HR computer labs (similar to those for postgrads) available to undergrads?

Sure I saw some opening/closing hours on it last time I went in

Pretty sure Venus closes at 10-10:30.... but not 100%.

Your best bet might be Red Raisins with a laptop and WiFi.

Venus used to be a 24 hour lab coming up to exams/other big deadlines at the end of the semester. Not sure if it's still the case, I see one of the PG labs in the main building had reduced hours due to people interfering with the equipment.

B2-042 is open 24 hours although access is restricted to 4th years/Engineering students only after 5pm afaik. Usually if you give a knock someone inside will be sound and buzz you in

I'm an engineering student but cant get in with my card.
Who do I talk to, to fix that?

incorect there are 24 hour labs open for undergrads depending on what course you study such as the physics lab in bm the design lab for some engineers as well as the labs in the B2 as was said above

4th year of any course? I didnt know this, was using the postgrad lab thats open 24hrs with a mates id and password.

not every course but most of the engineering courses have a 24 hour lab

It is pretty sh*te that there isn't a general one. And at the very least I'm surprised we don't seem (am open to correction) to have one for CSIS courses. It's a bit of a joke that I can't actually do work for one of my modules at the weekends because the module server and software are only available in CSIS AFAIK.

But alas, such is life.

Contact head of school.
request 24 hour swipe computer room with available software.
etc.

i think one of the big problems with the CISIS deparment is that the building is'nt open over the weekends due to cut backs in security so they can not have any room/lab open in it for 24 hours . i fully agree that there should be at least one Lab open 24 hour lab open for every student but that is an issue to be brought up with the student's union / itd

I heard that Kemmy is closing at 10pm starting in the next few months to cut costs so thats another lab not accessible at night

Apparently it's brought up every year by the 4th year class reps when it comes around to FYP time with no joy.

It seriously boggles the mind that you can't access the CSIS servers (where most of your work would probably be) during the weekend. Not to mind the software that's only available in CSIS. (Unless of course you join skynet I think, but that really shouldn't be something you HAVE to join to do your college work imho.)

I'd love to know how much it would cost to keep the building open 24 hours. Realistically, you're talking salary for one security guy and electricity. They could even make it keycard access only to make sure those from outside the department don't use the labs to study.

As a past student in UL, 4 year undergrad, 2 year masters, we had access to 24 labs all during my undergrad. Venis, AM0, B2 and the Com Science building (till 2 am anyway).
I honestly think it was a disaster.
Whole classes doing all nighters simply because they were'nt organised enough and leaving things too late. I don't believe for one second that students need to pull all nighters during the year (bar FYP maybe). UCC does'nt have 24 hour labs (I think) and they get on fine. The college shouldn't be encouraging students to pull all-nighters anyway

I must have done close to 100 all nighters in my 6 years in college, and apart from my thesis I can honestly say there was no need for them had I been more diciplined

It's fine saying that in hindsight, but at the time you needed to do all nighters or you were screwed.
It would be nice to have a 24 hour lab for undergraduates. Just in case the pressure does pile on.

It's a fair point, but you're making it in hindsight.

Sure, I know now that pulling all nighters all through sixth year in secondary school was probably stupid and unnecessary, but it was the only way I could stop myself panicking with stress because it made me feel like I was getting work done.

And just because there're no labs doesn't mean you'll get stuff done without needing to do all nighters, it just means it's a lot harder to do those all nighters.

Fair enough that you will inevitibly do some all nighters in college, either at home or in the college itself, but I remember telling students in other colleges, UCC and NUIG about the all nighters we were doing and they were shocked. It doesnt have anything to do with the workload in UL either, (engineers in UL do as much as engineers in UCC, can't say for other diciplines). When we we in UL, all nighters were seen as necessary, not as a last resort.

Maybe if the option was removed to stay in the college all night, it might discourage people from leaving all the work pile up.

Because to the best of my knowledge, you can only ssh to a CSIS server using skynet, which as I've told you, I'm not a member of, nor do I feel obligated to join a society for my academic work. Also, the server in question require linux, which AFAIK isn't available on the library PC's.

kinda wrong there buddy,

csis servers are off limits to everyone, unless inside csis itself,

I had a brief discussion with our course director Norah about being allowed ssh access from home so we could do our mySQL stuff from there and use the tables on csis server, she wants this also, but it the csis admin who shall remain nameless but we all know who, will not allow it, she reckons he reckons we'd try do something untoward to server, its merely a security thing they wont allow us ssh from the outside, absolute bollox tbf,

But its a pain in the hole, and we have all suffered fro it as a result..

also you dont need linux, yes we use the linux terminal for our ssh sessions, but you could easily do it on windoze with PuTTY
