Gems from the 1980's

Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden are quality albums, very popular on the continent in comparison to these isles.

Gut Garvey rates them as an influence as well, any other bands from the 80's anyone rates?

There are dozens but some I really like:

Prefab Sprout, first three albums are outstanding, great songs and harmonies
Art Of Noise, great, left of centre electronic music
The Blue Nile, gorgeous, melancholy songs and music
Cocteau Twins, brilliant, ethereal music and her voice is amazing
Dead Can Dance, fantastic, classical music influenced, gothic indie with two outstanding vocalists
The Fall, Mark E Smith is a complete original, once you get into them its a lifelong passion
Scritti Politti great synth pop
The The fantastic sounding political pop that still sounds great today
Public Enemy Never bettered in hip hop terms
Cabaret Voltaire, influential electronic duo, proto Techno stuff like Sensoria still sounds fresh nearly 30 years later. (see attached)

I'd also give honorable mentions to Japan and Propaganda who released some great stuff in the early to mid 80's.

That "Sensoria" video brings back some memories.

Still very partial to early '80s Scottish pop, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and so on.

A lot of goodies up there. Agree with OP - 2 x Talk Talk albums mentioned are top stuff. IMO they've aged exceptionally well and are still well worth a regular listen.

Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth. Still a strangely beguiling album.

I love In The Pines, great little lo-fi record they made in a wool shed. They spent more on drink during the sessions than they did recording the album.

I'd say were as McLennan is dead now so the band are finished.

I don't see how they're not 'strictly 80's. They released the bulk of their body of work in the 80's. Are we only talking about bands who started and finished in the 80's? If so that's a rather limited thread we're having here.
