Importing data into a template

    Hi

    I hope this is in the correct forum.

    Sorry if my question is a bit vague.

    I want to print certificates for a students’ doing a course.
    As there will be many certificates (hundreds) to print I’m looking to set up an efficient way of doing it.

    I am looking for advice on possible solutions.

    One way I was half thinking about was:

    Of setting up a template of some sort.
    Maybe a MS word document and have section where the individual data (names, scores.. etc) can be imported from another file such as a spreadsheet.

    Suggestions on how I might get started on this or other different possible methods greatly appreciated.

    I believe what you are referring to is a mail merge. As in:

    Dear <field1>,

    you have received the grade <field2> in subject <field3>.

    etc..

    That kind of thing????

    Yes - database and spreadsheet data merges are par for the course...

    I didn't realise there was a built in function called mail merge.

    No problem. It's one of those annoying features that is only evident after you know what it is called. If you don't know the magic name you're pretty much hosed :p

    Mail merge was originally used to create mass mailing form letters which is why it has that name. But now it allows you to create large numbers of documents from any template and a data source.

    I've seen people in large companies do mail merge manually, which is pretty distressing!
