ah , i thought the techies would be able to figure this out

any thing above a 4550 needs a 400 watt psu , mine is only 300 in this yoke.

Not exactly, that's a recommendation, If you list what parts you have in your pc right now and your current PSU we can tell what exactly you have room to upgrade with. Chances are you can get something better.

Or maybe it couldn't be figured out because being a low powered HTPC card is not an exclusive property of the HD4550. There is a negligible difference in power consumption between a HD6450 and a HD4550, neither would even touching 30W under full load.

a 6450 pulls 27W at Max load, and 9W at idle. if its a HTPC it will never hit that 27W.

if you've a half decent 300W PSU it should work.

what's the rest of your specs? what specific PSU do you have? and why are you so cryptic? if you don't want help why make this thread?

you could try undervolting components to ensure you're not stressing anything.

a cheap good 400W PSU can be bought for €45.

Hell, a HD5650 rarely hits 30W when gaming and that has a LOT more silicon under the bonnet than a HD4550/5450/6450!! :P

The 5450 which I linked to above, according to an Amazon review that I read, can run off a crappy Dell 250W PSU.

The 6450 is the same price as tthe 5450 but uses less power, and can run 3D.
