Freesat in apartment

Hi,

Im moving into an apartment that is wired for sky. is it possible to use a freesat box or do they use speciel connections to prevent you from doing this? there is a communal dish for the block. is it a case you need to be with sky for 12 months before you can go freesat?

Yes there should be no problem. The Freesat Boxes use the same signal, connections etc.

some apartments do charge a nominal fee of 5euros per month for this communal dish for both freesat and sky customer

They do? that sucks. Bit of a joke too. I mean once a dish is up, charging for its use is a con.

Op, if the coax wire is going to your apartment. Chances are that wire is connected to the LNB on the dish on the roof.
So just get a Freesat box and don't say anything to any neighbours. They dont need to know. Just buy a box, hook it up to the coax cable and away you go. Free tv.

€5 is quite reasonable when you consider a couple I know in an apartment who were quoted €20 a month on top of an €80 connection fee.

Thinking the coax or wall plates are live to the dish is wishful thinking. More like coming from a distribution setup where each apartment is "switched-on" when the connection fee is paid up.

I thought this might be the case alright. I'll just have to get a friends box first and try it out...
