    Is Aurelio injured?

Didn't he play a defensive midfield role a few times under Rafa?

I know he can't be relied upon, but with him, Spearing, Henderson and Shelvey all in the squad, Liverpool will be OK. Lucas is a massive loss, no doubt but do Liverpool really need to play a defensive midfielder against some of the weaker teams?

Agger would be a beast of a defensive midfielder, but I can't see Kenny deploying him there, not when he's playing so well at centre back at present.

A right hammer blow to the balls you might say.

Defensively still sound enough with Johnson, Carra, Coates, Flanagan, Robinson and Aurelio as back up.

Front 3 not bad with Maxi, Kuyt and Carroll to come in.

No matter how much you and other wants Kelly to be first choice - it is not he case. Johnson is first choice and Kelly is backup.

At Valencia he was used as a central midfielder under Rafa at times, and yes a few times for Liverpool.

Just thought I'd check-in on the forum to guage the level of despair.

Yes it's a massive challenge to lose such a pivotal player. It'll be a big test for Kenny to tweak the system and tweak it I think he will because he won't want to rely solely on Spearing.

It's a massive opportunity for Shelvey. Stevie's return can only be a positive and Spearing has shown himself to be reliable. Henderson will surely get more time in the centre, too.

Fookin hell though, didn't think it looked like a serious injury... Won't get a chance to lift the League Cup in March or whenever it is!

Anyone got Henry Shefflin's phone number for Lucas? He got his cruciate fixed up mega quick for the All Ireland last year.

Banega gone from your radar Kess?

    Also, sh93, obligatory YT clip:

Nope I still rate Banega, but I reckon the lads I named could do the Lucas job with Lucas out as well as play well alongside Lucas.

Banega I reckon would work very well with Lucas, but I don't think he could do what Lucas does to the level Lucas does week in week out.

I can't remember an injury that's upset me this much ever

Not sure I can explain exactly why - maybe it's that I/we've been on a journey with him since
he was booed and dismissed by so many inside and outside the club to the point he's
    established himself as top class.

It just seems horrifically unfair to the club, to us and to him
The possibility of him not getting back to the player he is is just horrendous and yet very
real with the injury he's picked up.

Swear to God I'm never like this over injuries or players
    Fuck it

No odds to me. Kelly offers better defensive protection which is going to be needed.

I wonder was it coincidence that Flanagan played as a DM against Wolves?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,337 ✭✭✭✭monkey9

    Probably Ilovelamp.

Sure he's got what he wanted now. Watch us soar without that average player who is not good enough for Liverpool FC!! (The Lucas thread is hilarious, by the way. The Muppet and Boggles.......greatly missed! Words of wisdom, as usual! And of course, the word 'delusional' came up for our love in with Lucas)

I have to say though, this is no time to be spending money on replacements. We have a squad, time to use it. Lucas will be back, please Fowler!

The only positive I can draw from this is that of all the players for it to happen to, Lucas is the one with the greatest degree of mental strength and determination to help him through it

Eh Why not ? Our squad is still fairly light in midfield, now even more so . Its a necessity we sign at least 1 defensive minded midfielder in January.

I'd rather get someone in loan, tbh!

It would need to be the level of player that Kess is on about and so will cost a fair bit. Needs to not just be a DM, though Lucas has improved in that area, somebody who could slot in beside Lucas when he's back, in the Adam role.

I guess the Suarez/Evra saga may take a back seat now that the police have handed their findings over Terry's comments to the Crown Prosecution Service. Will be interesting to see if the CPS decide to prosecute or if there is enough in the police file for them to do so.

I think a loan would be a good option but most likely will have to buy.

Fellani from across the park would be an amazing signing in that position or even Rodwell given Everton's financial woes. Tiote would be super but Newcastle will get fed up with being a feeder club soon!

Lee Cattermole is another that will be linked but I'm not sure as to what he'd add.

Liverpool have lost their “most influential player” now that it has been confirmed Lucas requires knee surgery that will rule him out for the rest of the season.

That’s the verdict of Reds club captain Jamie Carragher.

Defender Carragher admits the absence of the Brazilian midfielder will be a bitter blow for the club, after his emergence over the past two years.

Lucas damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at Chelsea on Tuesday, and will now go under the surgeon’s knife, after scans revealed the damage to be extensive.

Anfield officials confirmed on Thursday that the 25-year-old will be absent for the remainder of the campaign.

According to Carragher, the bad news couldn’t have come at a worse time for player or club.

“For the last 18 months, in my opinion, he has been our best player,’ he said of Lucas. "Luis Suarez has come in and done great things for the club, but Lucas has been his equal in many ways.

“He has been as good as anyone in the team this season and there is no question that he will be a big miss.”

The Brazilian remains in a positive frame of mind, tweeting that he will take the injury in his stride and return better and stronger than ever.

“Just to confirm that I will be out until the rest of season. I am really sad with the news because I was enjoying a lot on the pitch,” he said. “I am sure I will come back stronger and I will achieve everything that I dreamt with the LFC shirt.”

Despite his claims, the injury must be a desperate disappointment for the midfielder - not least because he had finally established himself in the hearts and minds of the Liverpool fans after struggling to be accepted in his first two years at the club.

Lucas was named man of the match against Manchester City on Sunday, and followed that up with another impressive performance at Stamford Bridge before limping out injured on Tuesday.

The Brazilian has been one of the team’s most consistent performers over the past couple of seasons, but before that, he was singled out for serious abuse from the Kop faithful as he struggled to adapt the Premier League.

He stuck at it though, showing grit and a determination to win over the boo boys.

Carragher reckons that is one of the reasons why Lucas has shown such character in the red shirt over the past 18 months.

"I've been there, in terms of receiving criticism," he said. "High standards are expected when you play for one of the big clubs and there are plenty of examples of players who have gone missing after realising the demands on them.

‘But you can tell he is a top player as he never let that bother him. He has just got on with it and plays in nearly every game.

“If he has a little knock, he will always try and carry on, doing his best for us. There are lots of different characters, but you can’t fault Lucas.”

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has responded to the setback by recalling England Under-21 midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from his loan spell at Blackpool.

The former Charlton youngster has done well at the Championship club, scoring six goals in his last 10 games and impressing with his all-action approach.

In the short term though, Dalglish is likely to hand more responsibility to £20million summer signing Jordan Henderson, who has also impressed in recent weeks.

All that's a bit ****ing rich from Carra, fairly sure he was critical of the signing of Lucas in his book saying we had English players in the youths/reserves who could do just as good a job as Lucas.

The difference is though that Suarez was never reported to the police so a CPS prosecution was never going to happen?

The Suarez case just seems too vague and arguable to me.

So maybe he's admitting that he made a mistake in his judgement of Lucas initially? I don't think he'd be the only one to be in that group to be fair

The only one of our defenders id trust in DM is Agger. He can defend plus is good with the ball at his feet.

I left out a bit in my original post :D I meant the Suarez/Evra sage may go quiet not that the police have handed in their file on the John Terry incident to the CPS.
