Liverpool have lost their “most influential player” now that it has been confirmed Lucas requires knee surgery that will rule him out for the rest of the season. That’s the verdict of Reds club captain Jamie Carragher. Defender Carragher admits the absence of the Brazilian midfielder will be a bitter blow for the club, after his emergence over the past two years. Lucas damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at Chelsea on Tuesday, and will now go under the surgeon’s knife, after scans revealed the damage to be extensive. Anfield officials confirmed on Thursday that the 25-year-old will be absent for the remainder of the campaign. According to Carragher, the bad news couldn’t have come at a worse time for player or club. “For the last 18 months, in my opinion, he has been our best player,’ he said of Lucas. "Luis Suarez has come in and done great things for the club, but Lucas has been his equal in many ways. “He has been as good as anyone in the team this season and there is no question that he will be a big miss.” The Brazilian remains in a positive frame of mind, tweeting that he will take the injury in his stride and return better and stronger than ever. “Just to confirm that I will be out until the rest of season. I am really sad with the news because I was enjoying a lot on the pitch,” he said. “I am sure I will come back stronger and I will achieve everything that I dreamt with the LFC shirt.” Despite his claims, the injury must be a desperate disappointment for the midfielder - not least because he had finally established himself in the hearts and minds of the Liverpool fans after struggling to be accepted in his first two years at the club. Lucas was named man of the match against Manchester City on Sunday, and followed that up with another impressive performance at Stamford Bridge before limping out injured on Tuesday. The Brazilian has been one of the team’s most consistent performers over the past couple of seasons, but before that, he was singled out for serious abuse from the Kop faithful as he struggled to adapt the Premier League. He stuck at it though, showing grit and a determination to win over the boo boys. Carragher reckons that is one of the reasons why Lucas has shown such character in the red shirt over the past 18 months. "I've been there, in terms of receiving criticism," he said. "High standards are expected when you play for one of the big clubs and there are plenty of examples of players who have gone missing after realising the demands on them. ‘But you can tell he is a top player as he never let that bother him. He has just got on with it and plays in nearly every game. “If he has a little knock, he will always try and carry on, doing his best for us. There are lots of different characters, but you can’t fault Lucas.” Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has responded to the setback by recalling England Under-21 midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from his loan spell at Blackpool. The former Charlton youngster has done well at the Championship club, scoring six goals in his last 10 games and impressing with his all-action approach. In the short term though, Dalglish is likely to hand more responsibility to £20million summer signing Jordan Henderson, who has also impressed in recent weeks.

All that's a bit ****ing rich from Carra, fairly sure he was critical of the signing of Lucas in his book saying we had English players in the youths/reserves who could do just as good a job as Lucas.
