since when has the term muppet become a derogatory term?

if someone called me a bollix or a cu*t i would take offence but..muppet no, they're furry puppets from a 80s TV show ffs

what does it mean to call someone a muppet anyway...stupid, dim-wit, loser.. what???

    It's not Muppet.

It means you're not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but maan, hahaha... so to answer your question I don't know.

I think it’s supposed imply that you are a character made of sponge with a hand shoved up your hole.

It's only a Dublin saying really. Can't remember ever hearing anyone else saying it

    Wiki appears to think that:

Possibly a blend of marionette and puppet, a Muppet being operated partly like a glove puppet and partly like a marionette. This is not the only occurrence as it also originated in military slang as a derogatory term. It was coined from initial letters of "The most useless person Pirbright ever trained", Pirbright being a British army camp. From Muppet, possibly suggesting that the person needs to be directed by others.

I love calling everyone muppets!! :D
... I have no clue what it means, though.

A muppet is a person who is incapable of producing an original thought.

The natural progression for a muppet is to evolve into a puppet when he/she expresses other people's thoughts - in a slightly comical style.

    Side Effects - Itchy bum.

Since the first place I ever heard it was in London and I've heard Aussies and Kiwis use it, among others, bang goes that made-up theory.

Its a bit unfair, isn't it. The muppets put on a fine if chaotic show. Why should they be associated with crap. If I were to go to the new muppet movie and if people were to ask me what the actors were like, I cant say they were total muppets, lest people think the movie useless.

Also I never understood the phrase - Mikey Mouse operation. What? A huge globally recognised international brand, the main icon of the Disney empire operation, is that what you mean?

If so I would have prepared better.

You're both underestimating by at least 20 years that I know of and probably a lot longer than that.

I've always assumed it was for the way muppet's mouths open and close as they talk... It's a fine insult and family friendly.

    Muppet!

Unless, I'm the muppet and I'm missing something?

    *digs preemptive hole*

The misuse of "muppet" as a term of abuse is typical chavspeak and, like everything else in the chav universe, is rooted in a profound ignorance. I believe it began spreading after it was misused that way in a movie in the early 1980s. :)

Those of us who can remember the Muppet show know that the characters in it were witty, funny, idiosyncratic and very entertaining ---

Something that chavs who go around calling other people "muppets" are not.

By the way, what is green and smells of pork?

    Answer: Kermit's finger.;);)
