Thought Coates had a great game after the opening dodgy tackle. Was delighted when we signed him. Once he gets more up to speed with the English game and a run of games under his belt he will be a beast.

For all that been said about some of the over inflated fees we have paid for some players on the other end of the spectrum as time passes it looks like we got extreme value in other areas - Bellamy, Coates, Adam and Enrique.

News going around now that Lucas is out for the season.

    sms_adrian Adrian Clarke
Back from #LFC team hotel in London and Lucas says he thinks he will be out for 6 months. Fearing the worst but has a knee scan tomorrow.

I know there has not been a scan yet, but players tend to know the severity without confirmation.

Lucas news is accurate, although extent of injury will not become fully apparent until after scan either late today or tomorrow

Gutted not only for Liverpool but Lucas if that news turns out to be true!

Trying to be positive we have a decent run of games to try and cope without him and will at least then have a transfer window to try and sort out a replacement in January.

Lucas is no Alonso, but he certainly edges Mascherano. Mascherano is a fantastic player, a real pitbull, and brings a lot of energy and tenacity into the middle of the park. He'll chase a player all over the pitch until he wins it. He's pretty hopeless once he wins the ball though.

In the modern game, the art of tackling has been superceded by the interception, though. The interception allows the ball-winner more time on the ball (they're not coming out of a tackle). The 'turnover' of possession is crucial, with most goals being scored within a handful of passes after the ball is won. An inteception allows a more poised, more incisive first pass, and so a more dangerous attack.

Lucas's tackling stats are great, but I'm always most impressed by his interceptions. His positioning is fantastic, and while snuffing out a pass may not be as spectacular as a sliding lunge, it's much more effective. It's what really marks him out as one of the best midfielders of that type in the modern game.

Also, for those who suggest Busquets? He's one of the most cynical cheats in the game, and I'd hate to see him in our team!

Sh*t, Jaysus, its a mark of how important he is.

    well that's it.

Jordan fúcking Henderson, your time has come early.

get to wherever Lucas is, get some tips, suck his blood, do whatever you need to do to get his stamina, tackling ability and leadership.

this timing could not have been fúcking worse.

On the subject of Lucas as a holding midfielder and being one of the best in Europe in the position on his current form, would you rate him as highly as Alonso when he was there in his prime? Or has he still a bit of developing to do to get to that level?

No disrespect to Lucas but he is not yet at the level Alonso was at when he was the same age as Lucas is now, let alone the level Alonso is at now.

But then again Alonso is a very rare type of player and there are very few in the game that can do what Alonso does, and to Alonso's level. So any kind of comparison between him and Lucas would end in Alonso's favour everytime.

Alonso was a year younger than what Lucas is now, and was good enough at that age to slot into a foreign league and stand out.

I don't think that Lucas will go on to be an Alonso level player or to ever have the same range of abilities as Alonso, but the signs are there that Lucas will go on to be a fine player in his own right.

    Six months minimum without Lucas?

John Henry best be loosing the purse strings for some quality to bring in during January.

There are some quality young players out there that can do the Luicas role but who would also, imho of course, work very well in tandem with Lucas when he returns.

What we have left at the club simply are not good enough to do what Lucas does to the same level.

We are just over a month away from the transfer window opening, get busy Comolli and Kenny.

But Lucas' passing and distribution is getting a lot more attacking and incisive (The reason why I hinted at development- with another 18months under his belt like the last 18, he could hit those heights), he doesnt have the range of Hollywood passing that Alonso has but he rarely concedes possession and is extremly effective at breaking up play. I wouldnt imagine he is anyway far off Mascherano's level imo, but definitely agree about Busquets, much and all as I cant stand him.

He's better defensively than Alonso, has a better engine, is more mobile, better tackler and better in the air. But hes way off Alonso in terms of passing and is also much less of a goal threat.

Although Alonso is possibly the best passer of the ball in the world (or at least up there with the likes of Xavi) so its hardly a criticism of Lucas. I could never imagine Lucas putting in a passing performance like the ones below for example:

Well we will have to be patient with him if thats the case, its taken Lucas almost 3 years of regular football to get there.

Ordinarily i wouldnt have bothered posting the news randomly but this fella wouldnt have much reason to spoof i dont think. The one on the left.

Are you trying to say that Mr Holland on the right would have reason to spoof? :pac:

Thats absolutely devastating news for him personally but also for the team. We don't have anyone who can do what he does and hes a big reason we have such a good defensive record this season. We cant afford to allow someone like Henderson or Spearing to step into that role as we simply must finish in the top four this season. Unless Henderson can adapt very quickly we will need to sign someone in January.

Not counting chickens but worth pointing out for those making travelling plans to the home derby that it's the same weekend as league cup final. So wont know until late January if it'll need rescheduling.

what we can safely say is that he's gone for a good while.

whether it's anywhere between 3 and 6 months is the only thing that tomorrow's scan is going to confirm.

may i suggest you refrain from calling us all a bunch of ladies for being worried for the guy, and the team, now that one of our best players has been pretty much confirmed as out for most of, if not all, of the season with what seems like a cruciate injury.

Henderson plays the same role for the Eng u21's...............but having said that he doesnt just sit in front of back 4 either when he plays there. At least we a 'body' right now who can play there, but dont expect miracles either.

Lucas is our most important player the work he does for the team in breaking up play and protecting the back four will be sorely missed.

    Gutted.

May I suggest you let some of the air out of your cheeks? :)

Injuries are a risk esp for feisty midfielders and if he is out for a number of months then the club will either have to cope until January (probably can do) and buy or just hope using a mix of Spearing, Adam, Henderson (and Gerrard if he ever gets fit).

Meanwhile I'll await the official medical bulletin.

Terrible news but hopefully people will understand how important he is now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,609 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Hope it's not true about Lucas. He's a massive loss to the team, but it would also be a big blow to him personally. He's really playing at his peak now, and winning universal acclaim in doing so. Must be incredibly frustrating.

If it is true, we need a fit and firing Gerrard. Even then, I don't think there's enough dnyamism in a Gerrard-Adam partnership. Perhaps a Gerrard-Adam-Henderson central midfield trio will be the way to go.

Terrible news if he is out for 6 months, best player imo so far this season for us. Some may laugh but lets not forget Jay Spearing, I for one thought he had a good game last night & he didnt let us down last season towards the back end of the season when Stevie G was out....

All this talk of John W opening the checkbook, lets not panic, with Stevie G back soon to slot into that position along with Spearing & Henderson, I would rather see the a cheque being written for a right/left winger i.e. Adam Johnson, Affellay, etc....

Has there been any word on Gerrard at all? Seems strange that no sort estimation was given for his return date.
