check out northampton's first try to see how slow Barnes is, i remember listening to it on RTE radio and Donal Lenihen was freaking at barnes for jogging back, Michael Corcoran butted in suggesting Barnes was running at full tilt but was just burnt, watching it on tv it was even more clear how slow he was, i reckon he's just a few pounds too heavy and his speed is suffering

Possibly, do you have a link for it?

I don't either but, if it gets them off the NIQ list I'll support it. If he manages to find form and keep developing as any 23 year old should, he might just show back up on Australia's radar.

    Justin one for you

If you come in on a project player contract is there a right of first refusal by Ireland in terms of who he plays for internationally?

I doubt it. Not sure "project player" is an official standing and I doubt the IRB would stand for that anyway.

If I remember correctly, Barnes had been haring around the pitch for the previous 5/6 minutes, is it possible he was just out of puff?

He's quite quick off the mark, I think he's quite pacy actually.

being from an athletics background i don't think barnes is particulary fast
certainly not for top class rugby..american football have a sprint test over 40 yards for aspiring players if they can't make a certain time it's goodbye
    anything similar in rugby?

So many different measures though, is he fast over 10, 20, 40 etc. Any of course, it's not all about speed. Fitz and Kearney are both Lions despite both being relatively slow for back three players.

Connacht's Brian Touhy used to hold the sprint records for a rugby player in UL, iirc, but he'd be well down the list of wingers in Ireland, despite his speed.

I think a lot of people (I know it goes for myself anyway) would like to see Keatley at 12 when ROG is on the field learning from him and bringing another dimension to Munster's play. When ROG doesn't play i.e. the bulk of Pro12 games, let Keatley gain his experience at 10 but I'd rather see him on the field learning alongside ROG than sitting on the bench gaining no big match experience. There's the possibility still looming that if ROG shipped an injury Keatley, at this point, would have to come in and do a job without ever having played a minute of HEC rugby.

I don't think too many people want Keatley in the centre and someone else at 10 when ROG is unavailable.

Will he have time when playing at centre to learn from ROG, should he nor be pre-occupied with his own position during the game?
Does it though? How many Scarlets and Castres fans will actually make the trip? I'm not being smart, I'm actually interested to know if you stripped out the Limerick people who (presumably) would be spending their cash in Limerick anyway, and the other Munster people who arrive for a couple of hours then head off again, is the net economic impact that big?

It's not just the away team that have supporters travelling and staying over, mind you in the current economic climate that may have changed. Also, on H/C match days I know lots of Munster supporters that would come to the city to watch the game in a rugby pub in the town.

Pretty awful idea. I have no issue with a statue, but it shouldn't be of a current player (or really, as someone pointed out, even an alive one). A statue to "Munster" in general would be better.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree but I cant see why a person can't be honoured while they're still alive and doing what they're being honoured for.

Anyone think that the likes of Holland, Nagle, Butler, TOD, Sean Henry should have a stint at Connacht? Must be awful frustrating to be getting damn all game time. Personally think McGahan is holding them back, a lot of them should be getting a lot more gametime but seems like they have no hope at the moment

Holland and TOD have each played in 6 of the 9 RPD12 games so far this year, Nagle has played in 3 and was injured for 3.

Butler and Henry are struggling to get the gametime but after last week and his performance hopefully Butler wil start getting a few more games now.

Wouldn't be stressed about Butler getting enough time yet, he's the youngest member of the squad I think, he's got plenty of time. He looked handy at the weekend too.

Watchin the tries again on the tg4 player, Barnes did really well in the build up to Zebo's try. Took good advantage of Hurley's kick ahead and really put us on the front foot. He might not have top class speed to cut defences open, but he's a really workhorse and a great player so far for us.

Bet you a tenner there's some clause in the contract that protects against the 'project player' simply buggering off at the end of their contract.

was it butler or pom who was in the irish u/20's backrow a year or two ago with rudduck and dom ryan? remember thinking that while he was the smallest of the trio (least physically developed), he looked the most skillfull...

Wasn't Ray Ofisa a project player with Connacht and he played for Samoa in the RWC?

I could understand the IRFU's desire for such a clause but wouldn't it effectively violate regulation 9?

Was Butler, himself and David O'Callaghan were the standouts in that pack imo.

Both technically. Ruddock and Ryan spent two years on the U20 side. The first was when they were 18 and POM was the year ahead of them. The next year was with Butler. You're probably referring to the Butler year though as they were the established trio. The previous year, Ryan didn't get as much game time. Both years they were bigger than both POM and Butler with POM and Butler both probably being more skilled players.

Fair enough. I see your point but the whole thing just seems a bit crass for my liking. Considering Munster tend to be greater then the sum of their parts and value commitment to the team above everything (or such is the image they like to portray), I just feel a statue of a generic Munster player or two would be better. Kind of a no one owns the jersey type thing.

There was Brian O'Hara too, played 7. Was due to captain the side the year after POM but got a few bad injuries. He's back playing now (scored 2 tries for Con at the weekend) and is still in the Academy.

Munster will get their entitlement and will look after the Supporters club first, usually, those with combined venue tickets get first option on a ticket for away games.

Northampton put some up on general sale a couple of weeks ago and we got ours through there.

Where are the vast majority of fans staying?

Munster have always been proud of the team spirt and players have continuously said that they're only borrowing the jersey but while it's a team sport it's played by individuals who not surprisingly get different contracts, remuneration, playing time, etc. Some clubs have player of the month, player of the season, sponsor a player, after most if not all games a MOTM is awarded, in fact sometimes there's two awared one at the ground and one by the broadcaster does any of this effect team spirit.

In the article I linked to the sponsor was even qouted as saying it was about honouring the team.
The larger-than-life-size figures will show Stringer throwing a pass to O’Gara and are believed to be the first interactive pair of statues anywhere in the world, mounted on granite plinths and standing between 16 and 25ft apart.

"My wife and I conceived this idea of honouring in Cork the contribution that Cork players have made to Munster rugby and we talked about it for a year. We wanted something that would epitomise everything that was best about Munster rugby," he said.

"We came up with the idea of a pair of statues of players, not to honour them specifically but to represent every past, present and future player in Munster, because the spirit survives. To embody and signify the qualities that have made Munster a byword for courage, determination, dedication and passion. And we decided on Ronan and Peter."

I''d say tickets will be available alright, 22k capacity in Milton Keynes Northampton are running buses to & from the game. Probably best use these and stay in Northampton.

Actually looking at the clip again it looks like Williams started and finished the game but Stringer got some gametime too.

BTW. POC is due on Newstalk tonight.
