My full driving license is up for renewal next month and someone mentioned that regardless of age it is now compulsory to complete a medical in order to renew a full Irish driving license. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? and does the GP have the necessary form or does one need to be got in advance of the medical?

Ignore whoever told you that. A quick look on the rsa.ie site will show you the conditions under which a completed medical form must be submitted with an application.

Thanks lynchie, I just had a look at the rsa site and it says the following, Is 'C' not the category for a car?
Are applying for a driving licence in respect of a truck or bus, licence categories C1, C, D1, D, EC1, EC, ED1 or ED (unless you have previously provided a medical report which is still valid)

No, B is a car - Only need the medical done for a truck or bus

Car is Category B: vehicle with a GVM of 3500kg or less and passenger seating for 8 people or less.

    C is for trucks.

The Medical is straightforward unless you go in high on crack cocaine or something.
