Easy way to resolve that. Only bid what you want to pay. :)

But then you won't win the item and it's rare!

But there's no logic in that. Why pay more than you were willing to pay? If the auction price is artificially driven up by some bellend with a shady account, so be it.

There's plenty of 'rare' items for everyone. :)

Because this weird thing sets in, & makes you go "Hmm, feck it like I'll throw another fiver at it & I can just forget about it then". Then that fiver becomes a tenner etc etc

& when a few people get afflicted by that, it drives prices up

You honestly are never tempted to throw a few quid extra for the sake of winning something you've been looking for? I know I have been many times. It's foolish thats for sure, but so is collecting hunks of plastic with computer chips in them really :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Nope. Because there's always a way to get the item you want at, or less than, what you are willing to pay (and I don't mean robbing a Spar or similar :)) for it.

By that I don't mean, for example, landing a copy of Darius Alpha for €10. It'll never happen. I'll use an example of a purchase I have coming to me in the mail as I type this. I bought some Seimitsu LS-56-01's for my Astro cabinet. They arrived after a month of waiting for SAL.

I discovered the sticks ar 5PIN and not the juicy microswitch prong fittings. Besides that the VF plates won't mount in to my rev 1 CP. So I had to by a new plate and overlay.

    NOT CHEAP.

Except a guy in Portugal contacted me with a brand new one he had spare. Plate and overlay, shipped and insured from Portugal to Eire for seventy cheeky sheets. Bargain. New overlays alone for the HOT-2005 are £25-£35 plus shipping alone. So I saved a few bob and got the parts I needed. Disco. :)

Items come around again. Even the rarer items do. I just bide my time and eventually it comes good. If it doesn't, so be it. In these times of economic woe I don't think any of us are in a position to throw cash about we don't have. Not that we would anyway right?:)

EDIT: Just wanted to explain my post a bit better in that, sure, I'd pay a Euro or three more than my intended budget, IF, said item was worth the investment. If you're talking €10, €15, €20 etc over then no chance, I'll go elsewhere.

I know I have! The only thing that usually stops me is the limit on my o2 money card.

Logic falls to the wayside when collecting. I'm only at it around a year and a few times I have went over my self imposed limit on an auction.

There's worse than that. I've bought 2 copies of prince of Persia because one came up that was in excellent condition. Same with zelda and secret of mana.

I've two boxed Snes but different boxes. Why have I two?

I started out with only buying Snes stuff that has creeped to Saturn, gameboy, neo geo pocket, dreamcast, n64 and megadrive.

I've bought games for a ds I don't own yet.

    I've 3 sp!

In my view there is no logic to collecting. And not just games but anything. Terry pratchett 1st editions - having letterbox editions and original editions.

Maybe I'm just cracked. Those suspicions are confirmed when I talk to the missus about games.

Um, correct me if I'm wrong but is the above not just an example of buying the wrong item for your cab? How is that an example of not paying a little extra for something you want? (P.S. Hurry up and get some in depth videos of the 56-01's and their mounting plates and how the throw compares to the 32-01s! :))

I agree with EnterNow, my "max" bid usually has some room for adjustment in the final seconds of an auction just incase. An extra few quid doesn't make much difference - ofc I don't let my max bid be dictated by everyone else so if the price goes well above then so be it, I can wait.

I started out with a Dreamcast in May this year and, well, yeah... :o
I've bought games for a ds I don't own yet.

Likewise. I'm stocking up on Mega Drive shooting games for a console I don't even have yet!

But you do need to keep a cool head when collecting. Those spur of the moment purchases can end up costing you dearly. It's not worth it for a game. I'd rather put some food on the table and stay on top of the monthly bills.

It takes the enjoyment out of collecting too. If I may I'll use another example, the Namco Museum collection box I recently completed. That took me months to finish. I could have had it done in a day by buying a full set. But a) it was stupidly overpriced to buy in one go and b) some of the titles were not complete with SC-OCD or RC-OCD etc or were 'Best' editions.

Feck that. I scoured the corners of the globe to fill my set and I got them at bargain prices. That was much more enjoyable and saved me a good few bob too. :)

Nope. It was a mix of availability and lack of knowledge/naivety on my behalf. I didn't know the Astro's had two CP revisions, HOT-2004 and HOT-2005 and that the first revisions were built for specific sticks. On the availability side that's all that was available at the time.

Couple that with the actual price I paid for the cab, which was a stormer of a bargain I think, and even taking in the purchase of the new plate and overlay and it's still a bargain so I don't think I really lost out. I was going for 56's anyway... :)

P.S. When the plate arrives I'll do the videos. It's in the post at the moment. I have the sticks etc so I'm 90% of the way there. :)

Happens to me all the time. My first trip to ebay ended with me spending 80 euro on Suikoden. I had to have the game and I ended in a bidding war I refused to lose.

Recently I spent 35 euros on Faselei! on the NGPC since I thought it was a good price. Found it about 2 months later for 10 euro and let another NGPC fan pick it up.

Being a bit OCD when I have my heart set on a game I have to have it so patience goes out the window. I think in that regard the only good thing about being unemployed is that I'm not spending stupid money on games. I'll usually wait for a good price on ebay and won't buy a game brand new (Dark Souls and Zelda being exceptions) unless I feel it will be rare. New games will be 15 euros in 6 months time and sometimes there'll be a rerelease collection with all the DLC, like LA Noire on the PC.

Oh I don't go in willy nilly all guns blazing. I have a limit but can and do over, within reason, and I am willing to let stuff go. At the moment I have 250 euro sitting in my PayPal and its wrecking my head not to go mad and buy some stuff but I'm biding my time and waiting on a decent priced NTSC Snes.

There's nothi g like getting a game that you been looking for at a steal after months of letting it go.

IKEA do great ones with zips for around €5 each.

Had a look on Ikea.ie and Argos.ie, nothing there what I am looking for.

Think I'd like to get canvas/fabic zip 'boxes' with a clear lid on it to see the games names on display when closed if you know what I mean.

Guess I should start another topic on Game storage as I am being fussy now :o

Yup. And it actually falls in to what we were talking about earlier, I nabbed it for a bargain price after seeing loads of expensive ones floating around the bay. :)

Same with the Hu Card which is actually a reasonably rare game, although worth more CIB obviously. Fun little platformer. Same with the oddball GBA puzzler. I've no idea what a plate of delicious pork cutlets perched on top of a mountain has to do with a puzzle game though. Which is why I like it. :D

I LOVE Gate Of Thunder and Lords/Winds Of Thunder has one of the most amazing soundtracks ever crafted. Wonderful games, delighted to have one of them. :)

Got the blue light for my Zelda sign today (I know, it needs a clean:p)

This was the red(actually a pinky red) version:

    dsc5676.jpg

This is the type of bulb used in it:
    dsc5710.jpg

Not sure what colour I'll stick with but I'll leave the blue in it for a while anyway.

Also got another couple of Super Card's for my GBA's.

You have to use configurable HD loader. It was a bit of a pain to get working but it was worth it.

Colour scheme?! That's an automatic man cave fail right there! :D

The signs look absolutely brilliant. Do want. You going to get some game related art to go up on the walls too?

I already have a lot of movie art and other stuff on the walls.

Don't want to tack the place up too much ;)
