Just keep trying. As I've said, what usually works for me is using "Direct Connect" when errors pop up, but if after a few tries, just restart the client and then spam trying to connect.
Eventually you'll get on, might take a minute, but persistence is what it's all about.

He's using one of the unofficial releases I assume, the latest official release is still the one for 1.8.1

Yeah, which is why Tal's server is laggy and crashing. A bukkit build is recommended for a REASON. Months ago a non-recommended build bugged out some chunks on the server. Never again!
