I have sky but not a HD package but i do have a HD box. In the package i have therre are a few HD channels like BBC and ITV. I have the Sky HD box connected to my full HD tv with a HDMI cable. Are these channels HD then on my TV or do i need a HD package to activate them? Never had HD beofre and not sure i can really tell any difference on these HD channels compared to non HD ones.

Yes, all of the free to air HD channels will be in HD (except Channel 4 HD, Open to correction). I'm surprised that you do not see any difference in them. I now fine it hard to watch a SD channel but my wife is like you and doesn't know what difference I see :)

Channel 4 HD will be HD too but you wont get that on a Sky box with an Irish EPG

Do you have any other connections between the sky box and the tv?
as you may be viewing via rf of scart.

have a look at NHKHD and compare it to the non hd version . (think is 508 ish)
your box should be set up to output 1080i.

NHK SD is nothing more than a distant memory these days. Try BBC One HD and BBC One SD

Do you get BBC One HD on your EPG without the HD sub.

You need to look out for the programmes that are actually recorded in HD. If you are watching old programmes on bbc1 hd it wont be as good as proper HD recorded stuff. I was watching some of the bbc children in need over the weekend on bbc1 hd and the studio stuff was stunning. I just get a new hd tv etc on thursday.

You can set your HD box to highlight the programmes that are HD on the EPG,they show up in yellow on the guide.
BTW, BBC1 HD is on channel 234.

By Irish EPG do you mean with rte 1 +2 etc at the top of the list at channel 101,102 etc? If my box has the NBC channels set as first on the list is it not set up with the English EPG?

Oops typo, should read BBC channels are first on the list:D

But yes I have the uk EPG then, I can also switch between them by going to sky news and pressing the red button and then taking the blue viewing card out and restarting the box and the bbc channels are first. Having the viewing card inserted brings up rte etc as first on the list.
