The program that most impressed me for windows (not needed for Linux) is a search program called Agent Ransack.

You tell it which directory you want to search, select some of the name of the file or some text within the file and it recursively searches the directory for you. Amazing! I really don't get how WinXP search wasn't able to do that. Sure, indexing files is handy and all but when I do a search, I want the file-system checked. I don't want a list being checked which may not have been updated.

Avast anti-virus is great too and I hear that avg it good as well. These are free and no one should be paying for McAfee or Norton (grr.. norton.. worst piece of malware ever) for their home desktop use. Windows security essentials is impressive too.

Steam client is another. It's a games distribution network which lets you download games and play online. I've got games like bioshock for 4.99 in the sales there. Some games are expensive but there is always something on sale so it pays to check the client daily.

Project64 is another one for the gamers. It lets you play all the old N64 games. There were some amazing games made for that console.

Besides that, adblock plus and flashblock are about the only other "programs" on my WinXP desktop that I would use daily. They make browsing so much more pleasant.

To be honest, I only use WinXP for games and everything else I do is done on Ubuntu or Mint and I would suggest that everyone give those a try sometime. If I could play my games through it, I wouldn't bother with windows. So many things are just much easier such as finding software. It's fun to customise the appearance too.

Digsby - Chat-MSN, Yahoo, Facebook, Google etc.
    FileZilla - FTP Application
CDBurnerXP - Decent free CD burner, much better than bloated Nero, Roxio etc.
ImgBurn - Again burns CD images and can make CDs also
    Notepad++ - Decent text editor
The Gimp and Paint.NET - PDN is more like a much improved Ms Paint, the Gimp open source photoshop solution
LibreOffice - Open source office suite
Greenshot - Very handy screenshot program
    7Zip - Decent compression program[/url]

Some ones I'd suggest, sorry if I've repeated some already mentioned!

    Nick

You know how sometimes if you mistype a filename in Bash, it corrects your spelling and runs the command anyway? Such as when changing directory, or opening a file.

I have invented Suicide Linux. Any time - any time - you type any remotely incorrect command, the interpreter creatively resolves it into "rm -rf /" and wipes your hard drive.

It's a game. Like walking a tightrope. You have to see how long you can continue to use the operating system before losing all your data.

There is another app that changes random bytes in memory until your machine crashes.

    um maybe not so useful...

Space monger, its the best way clean junk files off your computer, it gives you a diagram that shows you instantly what big files / folders are eating your space.

    http://www.sixty-five.cc/download/

The free version is buried under Free software and is at the bottom, does the trick every time though.

    Freecorder

    http://www.applian.com/freecorder4/

It basically copies what you're playing on your screen - up to a limit of the disk space you allow. Takes a little getting used to.

So if you're playing a youtube video, (or filth for that matter), you can save it.
It can save videos as mp3 files also, although i prefer to use flvto.com for that.

Not sure I like this flux thing, it's weird. It also makes the mouse cursor stand out like crazy, like when you look at clothes under a neon light.

You get used to it, and when you do it's fantastic on your eyes.

    Computer program?

I thought we just called them apps now.

I thought only retarded Apple Fans called programs "apps"

I put a strike through simply because I didn't need to add that to the sentance.
If you like Apple then you are already this.

Norton, The antivirus for those who know nothing about computers

mediamonkey is a great program for organizing your music collection. Tons of features but still really easy to use if you just want to play music!

Filebot - This is the greatest program on my computer at the minute. If like me there is lots of tv shows on your harddrive all named something stupid like Arresed Drvelopment- s01e01 or if they all have slightly different filenames so you can't look at them in order you can drag and drop the folder into filebot match the name of the show against IMDB, TVDB and others. It will then give the episode the proper name and do all the episodes the same.

I had 100+ tv shows that i wanted to rename. an evening with this and sorted!

only downside user interface is slightly annoying and you can't edit the resulting name if its not a match but move the file up and down till it matches the output...

wow that soulds really awkward but its not!

KMPlayer is the best media player I have found. Between intuitive controls i.e. play/pause = space, volume up/down = up/down cursors, it also lets you add subtitles if something you downloaded doesn't have them and you can re-sync audios, etc. There is a load of other stuff that it can do as well.Overall very very useful.

    Can be found here.

Stellarium is an interesting program that maps the sky at the current time. I find it fun and educational and has taught me a good bit. When I say map the sky I mean the names of stars and formations etc.

ntbackup - but not the lame excuse that you get with windows home versions

robocopy - unlike xcopy it doesn't give up after 300K files

    testdisk - recover partitions
    photorec - recover files
    ddrescue - recover 1's and 0's

cygwin - linux commands at dos prompt so you don't have to remember which command line options work in which version of windows and sed doesn't choke on odd characters in filenames and all the other goodies

blat - send emails from dos , handy in backup scripts

If you have vista/7 on an SSD this may help
    dism /online /cleanup-win /SpSuperseded

    paintdotnet

    virtualbox *hugs*

don't have a link as i'm at work but it works for downloading threadsfrom 4chan, doesn't matter if its /s/, /hc/, /b/ or any of the others just copy the thread address while this program is running and it will download all images, a copy of the thread and the thumnails for browsing offline.

very handy and the cmd window it opens will keep checking for new posts and download accordingly.

Downloads where you tell it and names all the folders 1234123 or whatever the title is so its easy enough to manage and sort the folders if you want to move them by theme

Did you try Chan Thread Watch? Works with more chans!
