Has anyone ever gotten an 18 speed mountain bike, taken off clogs and changed gears , cables etc to make it into 21 or 24 speed bike? Id like to do this as when im cycling the 18 speed I dont seem to be getting anywhere fast.

More gears will not make it any faster. You have to work #1 on moving your legs faster and if it is ridiculously under geared you can #2 look at changing the _ratios_. This means bigger cogs at front or smaller cogs at back. You dont change the number of speeds.

But really, if you want to go faster, pedal faster.

You can usually put a 7 speed freewheel cassette on a hub designed for 6 speed although you'd probably have to change the right hand shifter.
If you wanted to change to 24 speed you'd need an 8 speed freehub cassette which fits on a different type of hub so you'd need to change the hub or more likely the whole rear wheel as well as the shifter.

However, as Blorg said, more gears won't make you faster. More gears means your gears are closer together which is nice but it doesn't necessarily change your top or bottom gear.
