Cash seized - how much legal?

    I just read the news here

    Customs have seized 85,000 euros from the man going to Spain on Dublin airport.

    I would have think it wasn't that much, as this might be someone annual salary in Ireland - obviously bigger than average, but anyway.

    What is actually the legal amount of cash you can carry with you?
    Is the limit different while going abroad and crossing the border?
