    Paul Newman

    Robert De Niro

    Gene Hackman

    EDIT:

(Honourable mentions, leaving out some obvious greats, not because I don't think they're great, but because they've got plenty of recognition here already)

    Jack Lemmon
Walter Matthau (particularly in Charley Varrick, which reminds me of...)
    Joe Don Baker
    John Hurt
    Gary Oldman
Boris Karloff (mainly for his performance as Frankenstein's creature)
    James Cagney (for sheer charisma)
    Michael Caine
    John Cazale
    Clint Eastwood
    Eli Wallach

In no particular order I would pick these, because even if the film is crap, I'll still enjoy seeing them on screen..

    Paul Newman
    Michael Caine
    Sean Connery

Brad Pitt would get an honourable mention (a very under rated actor) & Steve McQueen and John Wayne would be top five (top 3 is too small a range!).

    i hope you're joking - brad pitt is sh1te

He deserves a mention for 'Floyd' in True Romance alone. Also very good in 'Thelma & Louise', 'A River runs though it' and 'kalifornia'. Not a fan of his more recent stuff admittedly.

    De Niro.
    Clint Eastwood.
    Daniel Day-Lewis.

Edward Norton and Joseph Gordon Levitt are two among my favourite actors worth a mention.

These guys would make in into the top 10

    Liam Neeson
    Anthony Hopkins
    Johnny Depp
    Gene Hackman
    Christopher Walken
    Sean Connery
    Matt Damon
    Morgan Freeman
    Michael Caine

Top 3 is really difficult - going to go with

    - Morgan Freeman (has done so much, usually of high quality)
    - Sean Connery (the name's Bond...)
    - Matt Damon (not everyone's cup of tea but he's done some really excellent films and if his name is in the trailer, I'm likely to want to watch it)

    Steve McQueen
    Stan Laurel
    John Cazale

    Honourable mentions to:

    Robert De Niro
    Mick Lally (great stage actor)
    Groucho Marx
    Daniel Day Lewis
    Morgan Freeman
    Harvey Keitel

Btw Cazale appeared in 5 films, all of which were nominated for Best Film Oscar and married Maryl Streep before he sadly died of cancer at 42. Very underrated.
