When the timing belt and water pump on a 1.6 focus are changed, Shouldn't the coolant/antifreeze be changed aswell?

Theres no way you could take the pump off without draining the system?

New coolant would have to be fitted because most of the block will drain when you remove the pump.

The rad won't drain though so if you want to change all the coolant then you'll have to drain that too.

Yep. Timing belt however can last up to 10 years, and the coolant should have been changed a couple/few times by then.

Best thing is to get a hydrometer to test the alcohol level of the coolant sucha as this:linky .

This tells you how good your coolants antifreeze is. Anything below -25C is fine.

What year Focus is it? Interval for Mk1 Focus is 10 years or 100k miles, whichever comes first.

There is no need to change the water pump with the timing belt on these as it is driven off the auxiliary belt. The pumps very rarely give any trouble on them in any case.

Cheers, Does that work for all colours?

    MK 1 Facelifted 2002.

The belt and pump was changed. It was done as a favour. Just the mechanic can't remember was the coolant changed or not.

I thought with the pump being taken out the block would have lost most of the coolant and it would have to be replaced.

    Cheers.
