Has it crossed anyone's mind that we may not see GTA5 until the launch of the next gen consoles?

Think about it. Nothing has been even so much as whispered about what platforms it is coming to. If this was really going to be on the shelves next Summer or even in time for Xmas, it would have stated 360 and PS3 as that would have been the tech they would have been working with. And with the new Xbox coming 2013, we have approximately a year and half to wait which nicely coincides with the time-line of the last GTA from the time of the first trailer to the release of the actual game itself (2006-08).

Now I know all the talk about the engine not being built for this new game but what do we really know about it? MaxPayne3 will be given full attention this upcoming year and huge amounts of money will be pushed into advertising and promotional causes for that franchise also. My guess is that Payne will be given a huge amount of breathing space before we hear anything concrete about GTA again.

And let's face it, RockStar always announce their games years in advance. MP3 we were told about years ago as well as LA Noire with the latter only being release this year having first been announced five years ago. I'm going to go out on a limb and say we won't see GTA5 up and fully operational until E3 2013 which again, coincides with the release of the next gen console.

I remember IGN discussing this on a podcast recently. I believe R* have never released a triple A game as a launch title. Also, if it is only going to be LS, I can't see it taking them that long to develop considering most of the tech just needs upgrading from IV.

+ we've seen nothing of Xbox720 or PS4 yet, sure, rumours are Xbox720 will be announced next E3, but what about PS4? there's been no inklings of that AFAIK, so R* wouldn't want to run the risk that either Sony or MS f*ck up and don't get the console out. R* do things by their schedule. They wouldn't rely on Sony or MS to develop the hardware on time.

San Andreas was released a year before the xbox 360, even though it was widely known that the next gen of consoles were on the way.

Yeah I'm pretty sure R* wouldn't be announcing a game as big as this for an as yet unconfirmed set of consoles.

As this article suggests though the footage in the trailer could be PC exclusive or from the Wii U due to it being so good looking. Thoughts?

I think it was all console footage. It just shows how improved the RAGE engine has become over time since GTA IV (look how much better RDR looked to GTA IV for example) and the introduction of better lightning etc.

We don't know enough about Wii U specs yet to say whether it is anything more than comparable to the current gen consoles.

Good guess but although its a good looking game, the next gen consoles are rumoured to be about 10 times more powerful than this gen. So a next gen game would look even better and be capable of having streets that are crowded with people etc.

A poster claiming to be a games journalist for "a Playstation magazine in the UK" (presumably PSM3) has professed, on the GTA Forums, to having privileged information about the game. He says that magazine staff experienced 30 minutes of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V at the developer's Scotland offices.

1: The game world is absolutely massive and will push both xbox and PS3 to the very limit in terms of what it has accomplished. Yes, the main city is simply Los Santos however is it AT LEAST 4 times bigger than Liberty City in GTA 4 and that is just Los Santos. The surrounding country side, beaches, etc are massive. For instance, we saw the main character ( an African/American, early 30's) travel by car from the center of Los Santos into the wildnerness and it took over 15 minutes. The views were incredible from farmhouses with cattle, huge wind farms, an oil refinery which appeared to be living and breathing with nearly 100 NPCs working on machinery, operating vehicles, lifting and loaded, etc, unlike the gas works in GTA 4 which seemed to only house a few NPC at a time. The forests are more beautiful than those in RDR and featured people camping, young NPC drinking and dancing around campfires, people riding dirt bikes and jumping over logs, streams, etc. The water effects, forna, plants, trees all looked beautiful.
2: The shooting mechanics have been greatly improved with animations for diving, climbing, rolling and crawling all added for better realism. The re-loading animations for new ammo also look cooler, less static.
3: There is much more climbable elements in the world such as ladders, overhand climbing, etc.
4: There are animals in the game from dogs to cattle but at this time it is not confirmed if you will be able to harm the animals. Rockstar were able to get away with it in RDR as it was a true depiction of the world in which the game was set. Allowing dogs/cattle to die in a game sent in current times may cause headaches with PETA. Its unclear if Rockstar were joking here.
5: There are planes to pilot and they can be crashed into buildings if you choose to do so....
6: Rockstar have included many, many more interior locations such as a shopping mall, college campus, police station, a huge hospital and there is also a vast underground sewer network which one mission later in the game involves a jet ski chase that culminates in a Fugitive-esque waterfall jump ( there are nods to the ridiculous but awesome Ballad Of Gay Tony missions)
7: The city is full of NPCs jogging, weight-lifting, hitting on women, being chased on foot by cops, shopping, washing cars, fixing fences, moving home, filling up their cars, etc.
    REAL JUICY INFO:
1: Cars can be upgraded/repaired and it has been considered to have a car have fuel forcing the player to fill her up.
2: The dating aspect of the game is gone. You still have a cell-phone but only people you will meet in the game will call you to ask you to do a mission or to ask you to do something else before the mission.
3: Weapons include the usual arsenal you'd aspect but the flamethrowers, remote mines, laxer trip mines and claymores are included. It is possible now to pick up random objects in a street/buidling to use as a weapon. There is also a museam where it is possible to steal old age swords, axes, etc.
4: it is possible to rupture a fuel line and if you shot at the trail of gasoline it will lead straight back to the car blowing it up.
5: mini games such as bowling, darts, etc have all gone. You can play basketball, weight train, arm wrestle, gamble and cage fight, enter triatholons, water races, cannoing, ab-saling, rock climbing, base jumping, ski diving. More to be confirmed.
6: Character customisation is back but only in terms of clothing, body weight, etc. The player you start off which, much like CJ, can't be altered by race, age, height, etc.
7: Rockstar said burglary missions may return but only as part of missions and not on neigbourhood houses.
8: No children NPC at all. Ever.
9: There is now an ability to grab people and use as sheilds or in "hostage" situations.
10: The cops are much, much, much more realistic. If you kill somebody when you know there are no cops around you will not run the risk of a one star as often as you would in GTA4. The cops will use smoke and tear gas, dogs, riot gear and rams to knock down the doors of buildings you are hiding in.
11: You can enter some buildings and lock doors, push objects in the way to barricade.
12: You become better at things as the game progresses. If you only ride motorbikes then you will increase your skills, same as individual weapons.
13: Certain weapons can be customisable and some even home-made.
14: One mission involves breaking out a very familiar GTA icon from a previous game...
15: Torrential rain fall and sunshine and even tremors will appear in the game.

Thats something I always wanted to see as long as you don't have to refuel all the time.

It would be good if it was an option that you could turn on or off. Might be a bit annoying if you're speeding away from the cops or you're doing a timed mission and then your car just slows to a stop in the middle of nowhere.

But you could call for breakdown assistance in the same way you call for an Ambulance/Fire/Police. A tow truck could come out to you and give you fuel.

fuel is a stupid feature. Much quicker to rob another car than go looking for fuel. They had it in Mafia and Mafia 2 and I never refuelled once.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,976 ✭✭✭profitius

What it would do is make players think a bit more ie shall I get the slow car thats full up or the fast car thats low on fuel.

An option to turn it off would also be good.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 538 ✭✭✭little big planet 2

the fuel is a good idea i think but it does need the off option but i think it makes the game a bit more realistic and if its true that you can shoot the fuel tank and make it leak instead of it just blowing up is even better because then you start a good old fashion fire on the street

Depends on the other features of the game. If car mods are back, then if you've got a bitchin' car done up to the last, then you're not just gonna abandon that.
It depends on how you like to play the game. Personally, I'd love fuel as an option. Sometimes when I'm bored, I'll drive the streets and obey traffic laws and stuff, so it'd be cool just to be able to pull into a petrol station and fill up.

One way to avoid the frustration of it fu*king up a mission run would be to have it not be a feature of mission play. Just free roam.

I'm gonna take a stab at between 22-10-2012 and 30-10-2012 for a release date. They only thing that ever gets released around September is FIFA.

Rockstar games nearly always come out within or just over a year after they are announced. San Andreas was released in the last week of October when it came out. (I remember because I was on mid-term break and tried to go get it in Smyths). Vice City was released on the 8th of November so its just the week after. GTA IV's original release date was the 16th of October before it got pushed to April 2008.

That being said, I wouldn't be entirely suprised if it ended up getting pushed to 2012. Rockstar aren't the type to release games in the christmas rush just to make extra sales/money. They could release GTA V in the middle of a complete economic collapse and it would still sell millions.

I'd sell my feet to play it... don't need feet to play it. Although getting up 3 flights of stairs to use the bathroom would be a chore :/

May need to think of a back up plan... Only need one kidney right??:pac:

I recall an interview with Dan Houser, I think it was during the build up for the release of GTA IV. He was talking about the previous games, and mentioned he wanted to put fuel into San Andreas, but the rest of the team were against it. He said it was the best choice in the end.

Will have to see if I can dig up tha interview.

In Mafia 2 I ran out of fuel before but only because I deliberately drove around for ages until the car was empty. Pointless feature tbh.

People were giving out about the realism in the last game. Now they want fuel added?

I really hope they don't put fuel in. It'd be nice to have the "shoot the fuel cap on a car to blow it up" feature back (can't even remember if that was in GTAIV), but other than that, no. Same with having to constantly feed CJ in San Andreas. I like using food as a health refill, but too annoying having your muscle decrease and stomach rumbling during the game. That's supposed to happen to the person playing it because they've been so engrossed in the game for so long.

I agree with using the food for health only. But I like the route GTA took with IV, would prefer if the series continued on a more story/character driven route, making things more realistic, while still giving you the ability to do crazy crap like shoot a tank out of the sky and then go on a rampage with it.

I'd like the fuel as an option, maybe just not part of missions, just free roam.

Would love to see the gyms and fighting styles return, would be cool get to learn some karate and stuff again.

Yeah I quite like the more realistic touch and bigger story that GTAIV brought, and a few crazy things to do here and there wouldn't go amiss (screw the jetpacks, bring back the Hunter and Fighter Jets). I mean, looking at gameplay trailers for Saints Row, it looks like an ADD drug addicts wet dream. It looks like its gone way too far overboard. A happy medium between it and GTAIV would be fantastic
