Ireland announces that its Embassy in the Vatican is to close.

As the Irish Times LINK says

The Government believes that Ireland’s interests with the Holy See can be sufficiently represented by a non-resident Ambassador," he said. "The Government will be seeking the agreement of the Holy See to the appointment of a senior diplomat to this position."

Internet Communication...... Apple I phone4s will fit the bill perfectly. As the Ambassador no longer needs a state chauffer he can drive his 3.0 litre A6 himself and dictate vocally his message to the Holy See and his onboard i4s will automatically type a text to Holy SeE. Steve got it right....

Major Apple fan..........kind of fancy jobs like that!

ps We got married in a little church in Rome....................Rome is wow, would hate to be the Ambassador recalled... words could not describe..... as the old song says ...''Greece is the word''

An Irish embassy in the Vatican was a purely ceremonial/sentimental thing anyway, no doubt seen as "essential" by DeValera and his ilk.

There are no Irish citizens residing in the Vatican (at least none who don't also have Vatican citizenship), and there never will be, so an embassy there is utterly pointless.

This is definitely a great move though, and a huge step forward in the right direction. Could benefit the Vatican too. They got complacent and arrogant. They need to be reminded that religion is not necessary for a society to run, and they should be grateful to be so entwined in some countries. And if they abuse their position, they may lose that position

Isn't the embassy located in Rome, as the Vatican isn't big enough to accomodate the real estate to build embassies?

If you can read this, you're too close!

Maybe if we re-establish it if they could ask god to sort out the recession. You know, if he's not too busy doing someone elses wife

    From the Independant:
Around €1.4m has been spent refurbishing Villa Spada, the embassy to the Holy See in Rome, which was recently valued at €25m. The building is now going to be used by the Irish Embassy in Rome, which will move out of its rented accommodation.

Distinct lack of a papal boyband in this thread.

I was pretty happy to hear this, it's pretty long overdue given the cuts of the past few years. I'm more disappointed by the Iranian embassy closure, the timing with the US/Israel - Iran posturing is a little uncomfortable. Feckin Israelis are going to get us nuked.

Hard to believe we rented some offices for the Italian embassy all those years, while this splendid gaff was only round the corner.
The Holy See is of course a mickey mouse "state" created by Mussolini and the (then) pope in a deal to enhance each others power and control over people.

Ahh but you see my beautiful entity we are not all humanists. :D

Oh I'm high all right. High on life. High on the sheer joys of living an existence where I own my decisions, where I don't have to bend a knee to a psychotic tyrant of a creator for the benefit of a few despicably evil bureaucratic priests claiming to be the sole arbiters of what's right and wrong.

    And beer. But mostly life.

The demands of humanism aren't all that demanding. I mean, you might have some trouble getting over your hatred of the gays, but that's your problem. They're a lovely bunch of people. And man, are some of them ever good kissers. Put some girls to shame, they would.

It's too late for you sir/madam, once you've had an infatuation for beer it's too late . . . However, now that you have repented your sins the mode of death will be something more humane but still incredibly painful to ensure your physical body suffers for its alcoholic pleasure misdoings.

It's intresting when you research the full list of countries that we've now joined that don't have a Vatican embassy.

Looks like Comrade Gilmour has had to take the reigns since Inda was caught telling lies.
When is the legislation for abortion on demand coming in ?

A non stop repeat of the same old tired lines in the space of a couple of hours does not look intelligent.

    Fresh material please.

It's on the way as soon as we figure out how to stop your crowd from sticking their knobs into children...that might take a while given we can't get a straight answer from your "moral guardians" on that so I wouldn't worry about it being soon.

The idea that any country has an embassy in the Vatican is a joke. It's not a real country, just the administrative HQ of a puffed up religious organisation that thinks it's a country.

not soon enough. Why? Are you worried that your precious priests won't have enough kids to rape?

I can't wait for abortion to be legal, I've always wanted an abortion.
