No harm in applying, anyway! You can put down your dip hours as your classes for this year, you could get lucky.

Generally, it's 26 days from start to finish.

The papers don't 'arrive', you go to Athlone, for either a 1 or 2 days correcting conference, and you pick up the papers while you are there.

Deadlines are usually quite manageable so long as you don't have other commitments at the same time as the correcting.

    Thanks for the reply.

Is it 26 days from the 1st of July or from the date your exam finishes etc.

The reason I ask is, I generally do be away for a week in July with voluntary work. Would this scupper my chances?

It's 26 days from the end of the conference, which can be any time from mid-June to the first week of July, depending on the subject. If you are not available for the duration, you won't get it.

It depends. The exams that are early on in June will start correcting around the end of June/start of July. The ones that are on the final days will start around a week into July. You can't take a week off during the exams. So if you want a week off don't bother applying. For the 26 days from conference to end of marking you'll be hard pushed to have one full day off let alone a week.

Apparently they had 3rd level students correct CSPE in previous years, I wouldn't mind doing that myself for the experience

Please be aware that the teaching landscape has changed a lot in the past few years - all teachers have taken big paycuts and many are on reduced hours, so the demand for marking has gone up.

That said - no harm in applying. It is great experience.

Exactly as above. You can apply but the demand for corrections has gone up so you are less likely to get the state exams. Mock exams are produced and corrected by private companies so they can hire whoever they want. Last time I corrected mock papers they wanted teachers with at least two years experience. They have strange hiring policies. I've had friends rejected because they're not currently teaching even thoughthey had a number of years experience correcting for the SEC. Seems ridiculous that a person who is deemed good enough for the SEC are not good enough for some mock companies.

Any idea when the last of the payment comes through after the advance, I corrected to get a few extra things paid for this year but just want to know how long you wait before you get the rest of the payment. I got the advance early July.

Does anyone know when the examiners get the papers to begin correcting?

Question about applying for correcting papers - I did the Bachelor of Education (primary) with French in St Pat's - would this be sufficient for correcting?

at the end of your conference you go to the SEC and collect your bag(s) of papers.

Hi, last year I applied for the correcting but I didn't get it because I was doing my dip. When I didn't get it I got another job for the Summer. The day before the conference was due to start for my subject I got a phonecall asking me to go up as they were short numbers. I explained that I couldn't because I had other commitments, the girl on the phone seemed a bit annoyed. Two weeks later I got another phonecall asking me to correct another subject as they were badly stuck. Again I had to say no as I couldn't let my current job down. They had written a note beside my name from the first call saying what was said on the first phone call and the girl was able to explain the call back to me. Anyway I didn't apply this year as I was meant to be going travelling but I'm not now, I'm just wondering is my name still on file from last year? I know the closing date is gone but would there be a chance they'd contact me or should I just chance and apply now, I'm freaked they'v a big red mark next to my name saying No to me because I said no last year!!

Welcome! theres a 'newer' dedicated superintendents/correctors thread at the top of the forum page.

Anyhow.. I wouldnt let the 'red mark' put you off. I get the feeling its a buyers market now.
A colleague got a call last week asking if he'd forgotten to apply this year (after being coerced into doing an extra bag last year). he politely said no, they started banging on about the 'red mark' for future possibilities. He said no after 2 further begging calls but with offer of 'new senior title' on the table... he asked what that would entail... place as supervisor BUT with extra bag of papers on top of the usual. Needless to say they'll be still ringing around!

No harm in showing an interest!

Thats one way to kill off the junior cert in june! Crap pay... (im still desperate though so hope I get it).

First of all, there won't be many Italian correctors as only 150 candidates or less do it at OL and a further 300 odd at HL. There might only be two correctors in the country.

As regards pay (based on other OL papers), it's roughly 4.90 a paper before tax. There is also a 206 admin fee, so if you got all the OL papers it would be about 750 before tax, plus your admin fee.

How many papers would you usually get (for popular subject)? Never corrected before and I'm wondering what the load would be.

    Thanks

Sorry for being annoying. I'm looking at public transport to get to athlone (failed the driving test very recently) and wasnt expecting late call up. Should the 'sacks' fit into an empty carry on suitcase for transport? Or at least be reasonably transportable?

No not really to be honest. I have gotten a bus down for the past few years and gotten a prearranged lift home. You need to get from the conference to the sec to collect papers and then you'd need to go to a train station or whatever from therethere, so you will 100% need to get chatting to someone for a lift. You'd manage the sacks walking onto a bus or train but they're not easy to transport.

Fair enough. I'll wrangle lift to sec and work from there. Do the conferences generally wind up at a certain time?

They are pretty bulky. Have you an extra large suitcase at least? I'm sure a fellow examiner would give you a lift over to the sec and drop you off at the bus/train station . Can you get picked up when you get home? Or else someone from the conference or group might be heading your way ? You might be surprised you might know a few at it.
