Don't mean to be nosy but, was it financially worth it for those of you who got paid. I'm think of doing it next year but I won't bother if the pay isn't too good. A lot of pressure for poor pay.

There are a number of factors:

The subject (some are paid more than others because of the amount of work involved)
    The level (Higher, Ordinary, Foundation)
    The exam (JC or LC)
The number of papers you get - while it's normally between 300 and 400 it can be less or more

Other factors to consider, if you are teaching on full hours for a few years you are probably in the higher tax bracket and so will pay the higher rate of tax on the lot. If you are part time or on the lower end of the scale this may not be the case.

If you are higher up the scale you will pay more of a pension levy than those lower down the scale.

So it's hard to nail it down and say if it's worth it or not. The other thing is what is it worth to you? Some teachers might not think it's worth the hassle unless they are clearing €3000 after tax. Another might think it's worth it if they come out with anything over €1000.

Money aside, it's invaluable in seeing how the exam system works and how you can prepare your classes for your subject.

For what it's worth, I've been doing it for 10 years, started at OL JC, then moved to OL LC and have been at HL LC for the last few years.

Thanks rainbowtrout. I agree with you as correcting is extremely good for experience. Thanks for all the info again. The pension levy is ridiculous. From December on it'll probably be worse. The dreaded budget.

No, I rang last Thursday or Friday and when my details were checked I was told that it was still being processed and it would be paid in the next fortnight. Seeing as that was a week ago, hopefully it will be in the next week.

wonder how long it takes them to process claims! mines being processed since monday week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,466 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

It's not always a case of the finance people taking ages to process the claims, they aren't given them as they come in. Friend of mine corrected Junior Cert and was finished mid July. Still waiting for payment. He rang last week and was told that finance were only given the JC claim forms for processing the day the JC results came out. So they were probably sitting in a filing cabinet for the 8 weeks prior to that.

I finished mid july too, they are probably like all the other workers today, totally over worked and underpaid!

    Me too!

Me too, its not nice getting your guts taken out in the form of taxes while Bosnian famalies are able to claim 90,000 euro off social welfare

maynooth_rules, what you posted is irrelevant to this thread. Take it to Humanities, Politics, State Benefits, anywhere really that it's relevant because it is not relevant here.

Me too. someone who corrected the same amount of papers as me at the same subject and level came out with 700 more than me...how did that happen? I had my tax credits allocated to SEC and only work part time now?

Does anyone know how I fix this? SEC or tax office??

Before you go crazy, they don't usually get it wrong to be fair to them. The other person may have tax credits that you don't know about and they might have had expenses you didn't have like overnights or higher mileage.

Also was the other person a late comer and maybe they didn't get the July advance/ less of an advance?

I wont be going crazy. Just wondering how they got more than me for the same work. I'll check it out tomorrow. Thanks.

in your first year examining you get 500 at the start. In subsequent years you get 1200.thats what happened to your 700.it was their first year so they only got 500 at the start

This was also my first year. I rang the tax people. It was an error on SECs part.

good stuff glad you got sorted. In fairness they are on the ball most of the time.

I think correcting exam papers is the kind of thing every teacher should do once...I corrected JC English Paper One HL in 2000, and I found it really helped me to clarify EXACTLY what my students needed to do to excel in that paper. I've corrected Mock papers for the LC for years and found it equally helpful.

Sorry folks, haven't got time to read 10 pages of this so apologies if I ask something that has been answered!

Generally, do you need to be qualified to apply? I'm in my final year and will have my exams etc. finished before July.

What are the deadlines like? When do the papers usually arrive? Is it the whole month of July?

    Thanks

    G

No harm in applying, anyway! You can put down your dip hours as your classes for this year, you could get lucky.

Generally, it's 26 days from start to finish.

The papers don't 'arrive', you go to Athlone, for either a 1 or 2 days correcting conference, and you pick up the papers while you are there.

Deadlines are usually quite manageable so long as you don't have other commitments at the same time as the correcting.

I have a colleague who corrects LC OL maths. As far as I know, she just corrects one of the papers, and has never found it too stressful.
