    My hero!

i hope they go and go soon! i used to work there for about 10 years and all i got for the last few years was nothing but threats of “disciplinary action” if a staff members figures aren’t quiet up to scratch!

I remember one time id try to upsell an offer to a customer (you know the 2 NR, 2 cokes and popcorn for 10 euro etc ) all those type of offers and even thou the customer didn’t want it, it was my fault! Apparently I wasn’t “happy” enough upselling it! Haha what a effing joke, I think I know how to upsell an offer.

I remember having a chat to the d**k of a manager about the new changes in XV and how I felt that they were going down the same route as chartbusters (internet in shops, tanning booths in some stores and how I felt that there wasn’t much left in XV and he goes away and reports me to HR saying I was a disruptive staff member and how he has concerns about me driving the business forward! (this coming after months of me refusing to engage in any kind of conversation with him about my personal life after he insults my wife when he found out she was pregnant, he muttered something under his breath thinking I didn’t hear him, but I did!) the slimy git!

Anyway, they wanted to have a more “formal” meeting with me to discuss these but I had decided to go for voluntary redundancy so that wasn’t going to happen. Cant give me a warning if im not working with them

The problem was I didn’t and couldn’t complain about him as another staff who he also insulted did complain after he made a personal remark/insult about him and nothing happened, besides who would they believe…a “disruptive” member of staff or a “fine upstanding member of staff who has always loved working for XV and wishes to work there for many more years to come” the moron

XV as a company don’t care about their staff, I know this from personal experience and its not just me, Ive known others who have left because of the way the operate/talk to/treat their staff. All they care about is how much money they make and are willing to sell ANYTHING to bring customers in, including tacky euro store crap!

And i totally agree with previous posts that the hierarchy of XV dont have a clue on how to run things, they have never worked in a store and have no idea how things are on the ground. they sit on the arse's barking orders at store staff to do x,y and z when in reality stores are under staffed, the staff that are still working are over worked (not to mentioned under paid) and while trying to catch up on things, they send in audit to try and catch you out and you end up getting a verbal warning.

Don’t get me wrong, I genuinely liked working there, sure I was there for nearly 10 years. I love watching films (i have nearly 400) and playing games and im big in to my gadgets so when ever we got a new tablet/tv/mp3 player etc, id be the first to take a look at it for just so id know about it if any customers would come in asking about it. I also still have many friends who still work for XV and there telling the same kinda things are going on.

XV dont deserve the staff that they have, ive worked in a few different stores and the staff in them are hard working, honest and really nice people and for a company to s**t on them they way they do is simply wrong!

It really is an employers market.....

As sad as I would be for my friends to lose there jobs, I really hope XV dies and dies soon!

Rant over...god that feels good :)

    LOL
The companies demise is nothing to do with the staff, its the product and service they sell is defunct. Their competition is the internet, we now have a choice a fiver to hire a DVD or download it for free.

I was only talking about this to my brother, 2 to 3 years ago there was 6 video rental places with-in 2 miles of me, now there is one Extravision in the Artane castle, which is a drive away. It still is busy but dying a slow death.

Although I have taken to downloading with vigour I still rent a Bluray when I want the quality, but in no-way as much as I use to.

oh i agree, everyone knows how to and where to download such things and XV knows this which is why they are pressing the government to crack down the same way as eircom, either to block sites that offers these services or for ISP's to possibly to report ip addresses....

as ive already said, i think the fact that they are going down the same route with internet/tanning booths as chartbusters went, i dont think there is much left in them

sure all you have to do is look at sky, you can order a film for about a fiver from the comfort of your own sitting room and dont have to worry about returning it and they have some films on sky box office a day or so after they come out in XV on top of that netflix are meant to be setting up in ireland but that remains to be seen if that will be successful or not. i do know XV have launched an postal service (http://www.xtra-visiondirect.com/) but again, dont know how successful this will be

They just launched an online service about a month ago (no advertising). There was an offer on recently, ten weeks for €8.99. Great offer. Sold 77 coupons. that's unbelievably bad.

Netflix are coming in January. XV will be paying the final bills in August.

Xtravision in Drogheda is usually busy enough, especially at the weekends. Have'nt rented a movie in a decade or so, but since most games can be completed in a few days it's great just to rent them for a fiver.

Usually have a cheap enough second hand selection too.

Anyway the last nail in the coffin of xtravision has just been nailed with the announcement of "netflix" entering into the irish market in the coming months...RIP xtravision

I never rent nor do I own a dvd player .I download everything or watch online .The whole of society is changing to the point where all books will be files and suchlike. It's a bit sad but soon people will just be plugged in to access 'life'.

    I doubt it.

Overly expensive, poor quality, Low Cap Broadband around most of the Country will rule out Netflix as an option to many and Netflix are also holding off releasing their pricing structure......it's Ireland, so expect just a little bit cheaper than XtraVision.

Doubt it. sure the main competitor which is Itunes are offering new movies for 3.99 and old releases for 99 cent. all in HD and people are converting to this format. Netflix is gonna be cheaper than that as seen in the USA with a monthly subscription of 9 dollars I cant see it being much more then that. It's gonna catch on and deal a death blow to xtravision. sure you don't even need to leave your house and waste money on petrol it's a win win situation

The only use these stores have now is going in for a stroll and writing down any decent looking films that would be worth the download.

TBH I don't download any film without having a quick look on IMDB. If it's below 6 then don't take the risk..
We in the download generation are spoilt, don't know how anyone could walk into a store and rent without knowing how many stars outta ten it has, they're serious risk takers man

What sort of individual is happy that over 1000 people could lose their jobs? Pathetic.

Believe me Bullseye, if you had to endure what i did while i was working there, you would feel exactly the same.

I still have friends there and ive said it to them already that I genuinely feel sorry for them and the other 1000 or so people who will more than likely lose their jobs, but as for the company it self, no way, dont feel one bit sorry to see it go.

If you read back over some of the posts here, ull see that they treat their staff like dirt and have done so since the recession started cause they knew they could get away with it.

The business model they are using is dead and i told them that only to be reported to HO for it. I worked their for nearly 10 years and i really liked it there. All i wanted to do was help but got threatened with warnings and such for opening my mouth.

They may have treated their staff like dirt, but at least there were staff getting paid. 1000 people now looking for jobs, some to feed their family. I'm sure of that 1000+ people were happy to be treated whatever way they were treated as it paid the bills at the end of the month.

The 'institution' that you hate is gone but the people who created that instution and the people who were at the top will survive, go elsewhere and have new ventures; whereas everyone else will be signing onto social welfare.

There is absolutely nothing to cheer here.
